omg!! Could she be in heat? Help I have never owned a female dog so I am completely lost. I have heard so many conflicting stories about when heat starts after puppies. Summer had puppies March 15. The past couple days she started licking, waking me early to go pee and today I see pink bloody spots where she lays. Wallee is not acting any different to her. I had someone look at her and she said she is swollen and bleeding. I have her on a list for spay....gulp. Now I don't know if I can walk her or anything......:eek::eek: |
How do you plan to keep them separated? |

Heat cycles vary on all females. Having puppies does not effect when they will come in again. Some females come in every six months like clockwork and others might not come in but every 7 or 8 months or longer. It has been 6 months since your girl's last heat so it sure sounds like she is in heat. Just a word of caution. Just because a male has been neutered does not mean he will not try to breed her. If he starts showing any interest in her then it would be very wise to keep them separated. If you are planning on having her spayed then you need to wait about 2 months after her heat cycle has ended. |

The heat last around 3 weeks. |
And another word of caution....every male dog within a 3 mile radius will smell her, so dont think you can put her in the fenced in back yard with no worries.....the males will be digging under the fence, jumping over the fence, or even tearing the boards off a wooden fence to get to that baby girl.....they can even breed THRU a chain link fence or a wire crate!!!! and when she gets to the stage in her heat cycle where SHE is presenting in standing heat for the males, SHE will do whatever she can to get to a male! |

Omg....guess it is going to be a tense 3 weeks for me.. |
Sounds like you are going to be very cautious. Our story... we took in Vivi as a stray and tried to find her owners through all the ways we could think of. After that, we made an appointment to have her spayed. Of course, that very morning, she went into heat, which I had to call the vet to confirm, since I had a huge lack of knowledge. We waited about 5 weeks for her next appointment and that time we were successful having her spayed. I have since found out there are diapers that you can buy at Petco, etc., if needed for the blood. Anyway, I am relating to your story and good luck through the next weeks. Thanks for being her angel. |
She is being a trooper wearing the diaper. I feel bad leaving her behind when Wallee and i go for our walk. That is her favorite thing and her little face is sad when we leave. I am still trying to remember what day i noticed her licking and when i saw the first drops on the blanket. She may have been in heat all week for all i know. Her puppies were born March 15. Does anyone know how i can figure out when she was supposed to start in case i missed a whole week? I am so embarrassed that I missed it. |

Poor little girl! Glad to see you are taking steps to protect her. We were at the little dog park yesterday, when I woman came in with a female beagle mix she had gotten. I can't remember where she said she got her. There were three males there and one began sniffing around the female and tried to mount her but his owner pushed him away but he kept after her. I asked the females owner if she had had puppies and or spayed because her ladybits looked swollen and she replied she had only had her for a month and they didn't know if she was spayed over not-she was told to wait and see if she came into heat. After we started asking these questions, I think it finally hit her that her dog was in heat and she leashed her up and got her out of there. |
Thanks everyone. I am doing everything I can to keep her comfortable and safe. I have had 25th people ask me if I was going to breed her..ABSOLUTELY NOT.The reason I got her in the first place was to keep her from being bred again. I will keep her safe in my yard until this is over and she can be spayed. |
I think Summer is so lucky that she ended up with you as her mom! It sounds like you're doing everything possible to take great care of your baby girl. Hang in there! |
