New owner Hi, I'm new to dogs or any pets for that matter. I have several questions 1) my dog hates to shower/bath. Is this just saomething they need to get used to? will they? 2) my dog is going to get neutered next week. What to expect immediately after surgery? is he going to be sad? do they even know what happened? 3) my dog seems to sniff at everything. do i let them sniff or make them continue walking. He seems to always want to walk really really fast - almost pulling me along and then stops and sniff and then jets off again. Also, he grows at everything and everyone although for one second or two only. sometimes, he will walk really fast and then decides to have a sit. is this normal? 4) he licks too me too much. can i get it to stop licking me so much? like a lot! |
Hi - welcome to YT and CONGRATS on your new kiddo :)! I'll answer your questions in order: 1) Yes, he will get used to it, just takes a few/several times...it gets better. 2) He may be lethargic that first night and not feel great, but should snap back surprisingly even the next day. MAKE SURE you go home w/ pain meds and give them - even if you don't see pain (dogs mask it). Also make sure you ask "what should I do/give if the pain doesn't seem managed well" -- always have a pain plan! 3) Dogs communicate a ton through smells/their noses. Yes, let him smell and enjoy the walk's smells...but you can also teach him "let's go" for when you want to keep him moving a bit. You don't have to let him stop for every little smell. 4) Lol...sounds like a yorkie! They are indeed kissers. Good luck w/ that :p. |
Welcome to being owned by a dog! 1. I would incorporate a special treat he only gets after a bath, might make him hate it less. 2. A day or 2 after they might be a little down, be sure to get pain medicine and watch for excessive licking, he will probably need a cone of shame but he will be back on his feet in no time. 3. Sniffing is normal. I would work on the growling though. Bring treats and maybe make him sit nicely when people pass by, reward for no growling. 4. I second Wylie's mom here. Good luck with that. You may just wanna get used to being licked :D |
Did you adopt an adult dog or do you have a young puppy? Behaviors can vary according to age and history of the dog/pup. Have you had him very long? He should not be sad about the neutering but he may be sleepy the first and second day. Some dogs act like nothing happened and others seem to need a recovery time after neutering. My little girl loves to stop and sniff things when we walk. Usually they can tell when another animal has been in a particular spot and they will stop to check it out. I let her sniff but after a minute or two tell her "let's go" and she will start walking again. It's good that you are giving him the opportunity to walk and explore with you. Dogs just love getting out and checking things out and the exercise is really good for them. |

I just want to add that if you're giving your pup a bath whether in the tub or sink, if you don't already, it'll be good if you put down a small towel or bath mat. It'll give traction to the surface so they won't slip. |
Welcome to YT and the wonderful world of Yorkies. |

more questions My dog hates water. Hated the bath we tried to give him. While on this topic, are we suppose to use cold water or warm water? I just kind of warm water The dog is trained to pee/poo outside and it was raining today.. so he didnt want to go outside. Eventually did it under the tree later when he really really had to go. Should i just carry him into the rain? Another question i have is, we live in Canada where it gets really cold in the winter. Is it necessary to put clothes on them. Also, people would salt their walkways and how would i prevent him from licking up the salt which cannot be good for them. And do you guys wash their legs after every walk. ? |
