When can Lily go outside? Lily got her final shots today. When can you go outside? I mean in our own yard? DH is dying to take her out to see "grass". Haha. Any help appreciated! |
The safest answer is 4 weeks after her final shots. However, I took Bella outside BRIEFLY and in very controlled areas where I was certain no animal had been, at a younger age. The reason for this is because parvo virus lives for a very long time in the soil, and you want to be absolutely certain your dog is not exposed to this virus until she has developed antibodies. Also, I did not take Bella to the groomer's until 4 weeks after her final shots for the same reason. |
If her last shot was at 16 weeks I think a week later should be safe. Your yard is okay if fenced . That's if its a yard you know is clean and you lived there long enough to know no other dogs were in it for at least 6 months before. If you rent and others could have had dogs there I would not feel safe for at least a year. But that's me and as I was a breeder I was used to being very careful with puppies. The age of puppy at last shot is important rather than how many shots are given. I prefer them to be no less that 16 weeks. |
I took mine to puppy classes before all final shots. You may wish to read this as it is a good source. http://avsabonline.org/uploads/posit...ialization.pdf |
They say wait untill 2 weeks after last shots but I didnt I quess theres still some risk but its very low risk |

I would never leave a pup inside for 4 weeks after shots - that's craziness especially in your own yard! Jackson was already 75% potty trained by that point to outdoors. Having a puppy solely inside until over 16 weeks would drive me insane lol. |
Oh heck I dindnt see you were asking about your own yard. My vet let me take mine out in my own yard immediately I wouldnt have waited youve got to potty train them |
Thanks everyone! I will wait a little while because we do have a history of animals to show up at my house. (Rabbits, raccoons, possum, etc). I would rather be over cautious than not be. Is there anything to treat an area with prior to her being let out? I am new to this puppy thing. Haha. |
Max went outside when I got him home. I have lived at my home for 40 yrs. It is fenced in but I never left him alone. He still wants me with him outside at 6 mos which I do. He is such a baby. lol I agree they need outside to potty train. Wild animals do not pass things to dog only rabies. So if you are right next to her she will be fine. Parvo can be killed by bleach or parvasol. This is what we use at the vet clinic I worked at. |

Thank you! |
I would wait to take her anywhere or around anyone until at least 2 TO 3 weeks after last set of puppy shots. But that's just me. |
