First plane ride Good morning!! This morning while getting my daily dose of YT I came upon the comments about airports. I am a fairly inexperienced dog owner and I plan on trying to fly home at the end of summer. My question is this, how to fly with Snickers? Snickers is about 3.5 lbs., (plan on weighing soon) 10m old. I am now looking for an airline approved carrier between now and then (any recommendations?) But I'd like to know from start to finish how this flight will/may go. Do you give your fur babies Benadryl prior to boarding? How do your fur babies act during flight? Do you take them out of carrier? I have not yet purchased tickets so I imagine when I do they will provide "does and don'ts" but I would truly like your input/responses. |
I hope you have a great trip. I have a Jeraden Windsor carrier, but I think all of their bagsare approved for travel. There is a lot of discussion on flying with Yorkies in the section below. Thank you |
Sophie Kate is an experienced flier, she has gone with us since she was about 7 months old. My recommendation is take a potty pad with you, just in case. Most airports i have been to have a specific place set up for takiing your dog out for a potty break do it before and after the flight (but note it is through security so allow time for that). I do not feed Sophie Kate for about 2 hours before a flight and I make sure she has had a bowel movement. For Sophie she usually is good with this, she is on a schedule normally and I just book the fights around her schedule. I also want to note that she does get Charlee Bear treats during the trip, they are her normal little treat which she really likes. Also I make sure she has some water, she will drink while we travel but never a lot. I always line her back with one of her favorite fuzzy blankets and I put her Nyla bone in the back (something to occupy her during the flight). I also always check on her during the flight, sometimes the flight attendants will let her come out of the bag on to my lap but do not count on that. Also be prepared to have her at your feet the entire flight, I have never been allowed to keep Sophie on an empty seat next to me. As far as security, you can carry her through security that is what I have always done. I have seen some people take their dogs out of the bag at the airport but I keep Sophie Kate either in her bag or on my lap (I do not want to risk her being scared and snapping at someone). Good luck, I am sure you Yorkie will do fine. |
I think most airlines prefer you to keep your pet in their carrier while aboard the plane. I just purchased a jaraden soho specifically for my upcoming trips plus they're really pretty lol. Depending on how calm/ excitable Snicker's is during car trips would determine whether or not I'd administer benadryl. If you visit your vet beforehand they can prescribe something and/or give you the correct dosage of benadryl. I would bring a blanket from home as well as a toy or two. Have a wonderful trip! |
Another thing to note, Airplanes are cold!!! I put a light T-Shirt on Sophie Kate when we are on a plane. Last business trip I was on there was a lady going to New Orleans with her Shih Tzu she had a Thundershirt on him while in his bag, she said it kept him calm and warm. |
It's hard to say how it will go as each dog is different. Our Wylie does great, but Marcel HATES that carrier and we have to tranq him w/ Ace in order to fly. I always bring along wipes, pee pad, treats/food, Benadryl, Ace, towel, water etcetera. Some flight attendants will let you take them out, even though they're not supposed to...so don't assume it's okay. Planes are often cool, however, down by your feet they can also be quite HOT and stuffy - so I put a cooling bag of gel under their pad they're laying on. For carriers, I like Celltei. |
Good ideas, many things I would not of thought of. Thank you so much. |
My dog originally was a bit afraid about being put in his travel bag…I would leave it out and let him sleep in it a week before we would travel. He came to understand that meant we were going and more importantly TOGETHER :) It got to the point he'd get so excited that I could only take it out the day before a trip. I always made sure he got plenty of exercise prior to our flight and that he was well hydrated the day before and had sips of water during travel. If he was anxious or panting I had a small towel I would wet down and gently rub him down with. I found the calmer I was the calmer he was. Just made travel part of the drill and the more we did it the easier it was for him. He'd usually sleep the entire trip (cross country) I'd carry food (kibble) and treats for him. I'd occasionally sneak my hand in the bag during the flight to scratch his ears and let him give me a lick. Dog logged a lot of miles in 11 years. My advice if your traveling alone is just be organized through TSA. I'd send everything through and his carrier last, carry him through. He was easy to put back in I'd set him in and put light pressure on his back and head and he'd lay down but I think for many this is the hardest part. Again…just act as if this is routine and give the dog lots of love and reassurance. Happy Trails! |
