increased appetite after spay Hey everyone. As some of you know from another previous thread, Lexi just got spayed last week (Thursday). She is 6 months old. Anyway, The last couple of days she has been eating more than she ever has. I free feed, but always put a set amount out. The kibble recommends between 1/4-3/4 for 6 lb adult weight. She is charted to be 5 lbs. based on her 12 week age, but I know that is not always accurate so I put out 3/4 cup. She always eats about 1/2 cup, but the past couple days she ate the whole 3/4 cup! Just wondering if anyone else noticed an increase in appetite after being spayed or could it be something else like a growth spurt. She is still a little under 4 lbs. and hasn't gained much this past month, so I really am hoping she hits a big growth spurt. Anyway, just wanted to see what others with more experience thought! Thanks. |
could be a growth spurt. I don't think it's a bad thing. :) glad all went well and lexi is feeling good after her spay. |
Just watch her weight. Feel her body condition. I feed an adult male yorkie who weighs 6.5 lbs about 1/2 c per day, and more if we have a high exercise day. I feed 2x per day. I also would not increase her food after a spay. Just because she ate up all her food, doesn't mean she needs more food:) |
Personally, I don't like to free feed and give about 1/4c twice daily. But she's still a puppy. Are you feeding puppy food still or a brand that is all age? You need to consider when dogs (generally-not Lexi) become overweight it is because they are over fed and not related to spay or neutering. Bogey would eat 2 cups a day if I allowed him. I think he's part piggy :D |
Thanks everyone. I will be sure to monitor her weight. She always looks super skinny so the past couple days she definitely looks more filled out (in a good way). She is still on puppy food. I have been free feeding because she has always been a picky eater and was always hard to get her to eat her kibble, which is why the increase in food is surprising. If this continues, I will think about putting her on scheduled feeding. |
Hannah's eating habits did not change after spaying. That might be a good question for your vet. I would love to know what he/she says about it. I have always free fed only because Hannah never sits and eats a whole meal at one time. She can have food in her bowl all day and barely touch it but then when we sit to watch TV I can put some in my hand and she acts like she's starving. I think I caused that when she was little. I was scared that she wasn't eating enough so I would hand feed her. Your baby is still growing so maybe a little more is not so bad?? |
Update Lexi went back to eating her normal amount after a few days. Must have been a growth spurt. Went to the vet today to get her spay incision checked and she weighed 4.4 lbs. Just two weeks ago when she went in for her spay she was 3.7 lbs.! |
