Heartworm meds year round I'm just curious, for those that give heartworm medicine year round, does your vet require a blood draw heartworm test every year? Quite a few people I've talked to say their vet does it every other year, if your pup is on meds year round. ZoE's vet requires it yearly no matter what. |

We have Mosquitoes into November .. We do a 4DX test ( Heartworm , 3 Tick diseases) March 1st of every year .. |
We usually test yearly. |
My vet likes to test yearly...which seems kind of odd to me if/when you've never missed a single dose. I understand their desire for erring on the side of caution though. |
I'm pretty sure they test yearly for the simple reason that people are not always as compliant as they claim to be. Here's a little more info: https://www.vet.purdue.edu/vth/sacp/...nsonHWprev.pdf |
Bella is tested for heartworms once a year too, even though she is on heartworm medicine year-round. The vets just want to be extra careful. |

I give heart guard year round and my vet doesn't require they get tested. If I stopped in the winter the vet would require testing. |
Recommended yearly. Required every other year (with a waiver). Product failure is always a concern. They should be tested yearly. |
I test yearly for Heartworm along with other bloodwork for my senior(s), and complete bloodpanel ever other year for the youngsters. |
Since we have mosquitoes year-round in Texas my vet doesn't suggest it. Just tells us to have Cook on it year round, so she gets her Heartgard chew on the 9th of every month (and wow does she love it). |
We just got back from ZoE's visit to the vet for her heartworm test. Test and a full year of Sentinel for $103.48. Seems very reasonable to me. I asked about the need for yearly test, and he said exactly as others here have mentioned, sometimes people arent as faithful in administering meds as they claim, and dogs may vomit the pill outside of your presence, so he feels yearly testing is in the best interest of the dog. He said so far this year he has had 5 dogs test positive for heartworm. |

Pretty reasonable .. |
Honestly I think all year is really the safest and I also think yearly testing is safest. I do both. I have never wanted to not test yearly so not sure what my vet would do if someone didn't want to. |
