Thunder shirt for yorkie Hello! I just purchased a thunder shirt for my yorkie. He was an abused dog who suffers from lots of anxiety, aggression especially towards men, he's protective, and so on. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with a thunder shirt on their yorkie, and what it was being used for. Also, suggestions are welcome! |
I have used one on my girl for thunderstorms and it works great. |
We have 2 thundershirts that we use for fireworks and thunderstorms. Pebbles does not do well with fireworks and it seems to really help her this time of year. Bogey is very fearful of thunderstorms. It's helpful for him but only if I put it on him well before the storms start and I also give him a Benadryl too. I hope that it will help with your rescue. I've also used Anxitane in the past which is from your vet but it really didn't help all that much so we stopped using it. When my vet suggested trying it he said that it's either very helpful or doesn't help at all. For Bogey I had much better results with the Thundershirt and Benadryl as needed. Maybe you could ask the vet about the Anxitane and get his opinion. It dos take a while for it to begin working and is not an immediate fix to the issues. If I recall I had to use it for several weeks and since I was hoping that it would help used it for about 6 months before discontinuing use. I had one for one of my fosters. It didn't work for her but I think bc she was too small. She was about 3 lbs and we got the smallest size. It was still too loose on her. |
I found a regular doggy T-shirt does the same. |

Benadryl just makes the dog sleepy often dogs with high anxiety will still stay awake during things they are afraid of. there are yorkie sized pills of things like Zanex for anxiety issues, which you should get from a vet, plus before giving a dog any type of medicine you should check with your vet anyway. Lola is wearing her thundershirt right now for the first time, I just got it for the fireworks and for when we travel by air. She has it on now though since one of our smoke alarms is going off randomly and I can not figure out which one it is. The sound of the smoke alarm makes her more anxious than fireworks and anything else. I will let you know how she reacts the next time it goes off. |

I just hope it works for my little boy! And 40 dollars for a shirt is not cheap either. Haha. |
Woohoo! Another Alaska Yorkie owner! Slowly but surely, we're taking over YT! I've used a Thundershirt for years and like it. One of my guys is petrified of fireworks and thunder. The shirt isn't a magic cure but it definitely takes the edge off. So much so that I lost it once and didn't think twice buying another. |

It took me a long time to get one. I wasn't sold on it till I finally couldn't take it anymore and ran out and got one. My girl, Sakura, is wearing her Thundershirt now because of fireworks. She wears it for thunder and fireworks. She is just now getting over the thunder. But that may have been the sudden road trip in bad weather due to a death in the family, than to wearing her Thundershirt the whole way there and during the bad weather. She was such a trouper! We are working on the fireworks fear now. With it on she is no where near as bad as before she had it. I would buy another if my boy, Axel, needed one. But he has no fear of anything. Works miracles for Sakura. |

:o:D LOL yes, but you can see how much I know about drugs since I did not even know that Xanax started with an X . I am not really suggesting her to use it, but that it is available, my vet prescribed the generic Alprazolam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the first time I got it at the pharmacy the second time at her office. So far I have only used it for airplane rides, but I am going to give her a small dose before the fireworks show out in front of our house. In regards to the Benadryl my comment was meant for the poster below you, I know you are very well informed but have no idea about the other gal. IMO I always think it is a good idea to check with the vet before trying a medicine |
