What age to buy a puppy Hello, I want to buy a male yorkie, but I am not sure at what age most puppies are aloud to be separated from there mother. I have seen people selling puppies that are as young as 5 weeks, that seems a little too young. Crystal :aimeeyork |
Puppies should be 12 weeks but never buy one under 8 weeks. |
There is not a "magic" age when the puppies are automatically ready to leave mom. When you buy from a reputable breeder, the breeder will evaluate each individual puppy as to his/her readiness to leave mom as well as the new owner's ability to take care of the puppy. This topic has always inspired a lot of debate. Can't wait to read all of the responses! :) |

About 9 - 10 wks, sometimes later. :p 5 weeks are too young, they are not completely weaned. :( Plus they are not eating solid food, nor are they socialized. The Dams start socializing the pups between 6 - 8wks. In Calif it is Law now, a puppy can not be sold under 8wks. Check you State, there are other States that have this law too. |

My breeder gave me Twinkie's blanket to take home with me so she could have a smell that would be familiar to her. Hope that helps. |
Every breeder is different especially from country to country.Over here (Majorca,Spain) all breeds are allowed home at 45 days old,in bigger breeds as young as 40 days. Both of my yorkies came home at 5 and 6 weeks old and both were fine,it all depends on where you are and of course on the breeder:) |
I don't know the answer to this, really, but when we got Bella this weekend the breeder said that she evaluates when they're ready to be placed in the new home. Bella is 8 weeks old and she actually did really wonderfully her first night home. She cried a little bit, but once we put her toy in the playpen with her she was fine and slept all night. I'm sure she may have bad nights here and there, but so far so really good. |

The first months of a puppy's life are the most crucial ones. It goes through several developmental processes and needs to identify and relate to its own species therefore being with its mother is very important. This also gives the puppy the opportunity to socialize with both humans and other dogs. Aside from that clinical practice shows puppies that have been seperated from their mom as early as 6weeks show a handicap in developing adult social skills. |
I dont think that I would get a puppy less than 8 weeks. It is too young for the puppy to be gone from the mother. I don't breed but I think it would be best to wait between 10-12 weeks depeding on the individual pup. |
Dont buy a puppy that is less than 8 weeks old. There are some breeders that keep them untill 10-12 weeks. |
I recommend getting them at ten weeks. |
You can "buy it" any time after 6 weeks (most won't show it until after 1st shot) but you shouldn't take possession until 12 weeks. At least that is the recommendation from the most experienced, reputable breeders and the YTCA. |
Age for a new home My puppies I may have for sale for pet don't go anywhere until at least 12 weeks but that also depends on their size at that age. If it is a particularly small one that is less than about 2 1/2 lbs at that age, I don't let it go until it is 2 1/2 lbs. Usually these ones will mature on the smaller side. My dams wean their pups anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks of age. I of course, started feeding them at about 4 weeks and Mom still nurses them. Weaning and letting them go to a new home and strange environment can create a dirth of problems as the stress of teething, weaning, a new home can drop the immune system causing digestive problems, coccidia to take a hold, eating problems can occur resulting in hypoglycemia. Also my puppies being with their moms and after their first vaccination, other adult Yorkies I have, learn dog manners from the best source - their mom and other Yorkies. |
The more time with their Mother and their litter mates the better as they learn to better understand how to interact with their own kind. To soon and the ability to "talk " to other dogs is limited an sets up issues that do not need to occur. Coming solely from the training end of things not the breeding end I would say 11 to 12 weeks at the least. If you know the breeder is socializing them well to sights and sounds and people. Joy |
