My husband finally gave me the go ahead to add another yorkie. As if I really needed his permission. :D. My breeder, I decided to go with Rasta's breeder, has a litter due in mid July and I get first pick :). My thing is my husband is currently deployed and will not be home for a little over 8 months. Five of those months the puppy will have been in my home. Will my new puppy have issues with my husband when he does come home?

That is a yes and no answer. I know when I got a little one and my hubby was gone, he came home about 10 months after I got her. At first she was afraid of him and growled at him. BUT she kinda of knew who he was as I let her have some of his socks and T Shirts so she knew his scent. It took about a week for her to get used to him.

So should I take an item of his to the breeder's home also? When I go to pick my puppy I planned on taking an old tshirt of mine so she could get used to my scent. Should I also put something of his in her x-pen?

I would put items with both of your scents in the X-pen and also at the breeders as well.

I think pups pick up on your vibes when a new person comes into the home. They are curious, sometimes a little guarded, but when they see your reaction to that person it assures them that they are welcome. All it usually takes is the new person to not force themselves on the pup, let the pup come to them on it's own terms, offer them treats and a belly rub and they will become best buddies.

Congratulations. I'm in puppy envy :D

:thumbup::thumbup: Great idea, his socks and shirts, I bet his scent was all throughout your home too.

:thumbup::thumbup: When my brother visited for the first time, I was fascinated that Max knew he was different than typical visitors. He instantly loved my brother, without any physical cues from me, like hugging. It must have been the vibes.

Do you ever have the opportunity to have 'face time' with your hubby on the computer or phone? Your puppy may pick up on the sound of his voice, and your reaction to it. Might lay a good foundation for when your husband returns.

Congratulations on adding another!

So true, they are sensitive to how we feel about the person. However, my Kayla fell in love with a painter who was working at my house a couple years ago, and she would sit at the bottom of the ladder just waiting for him to come down. She'd crawl on his lap when he was painting lower trim... so funny. I had no such warm feelings for him, haha, and ultimately fired him.

:yelrotflmToo funny!! Maybe Kayla knew the man was an animal lover, if not a great painter. On one of my walks with Max, we encountered an elderly 'cowboy' visiting a neighbor. Max reacted to him like he was family. Very unusual considering the man was wearing a big cowboy hat, something Max would normally bark at. The man told me that animals are always drawn to him.

Yes, we try to to face time at least 3 times a week. That's a great idea! Thanks!!!!:)

Another thought: Socialization in general will help her accept new situations. Don't forget to let her meet people in the outside world and in your home.

Lots of great ideas! Just wanted to say congrats on getting your new little girl. I know how excited you must be. Can't wait to see pictures of your new pup. Hopefully the breeder will let you take some so we can see her even before you bring her home. All this new puppy talk makes me want another one but I am pooched to the max right now with Fosters and baby sitting my Grandsons Lab.

When Ryan got Guinness for my anniv present he was working in Tenn, now granted maybe once a month we would fly or drive to visit and we video chatted daily but as a whole it was just me and Guinness for pretty much a year alone. Guinness LOVES his daddy... well that is if I am not home but if I am home he is glued to me haha
Ryan had to go on a week long business trip after he was back home and Guinness got so upset by him leaving that he sat at the door and licked the paint off the wall.

I never did the shirt thing BUT Guinness did use his pillow in bed... which is still a fight for them a year later over who it actually belongs to :P
