How to get Max to come He is going to be 6 mos soon. Lately he is running from us inside and out. I call him and he just looks at me like I am crazy. I talk happy still no luck. If I walk towards him he runs even when it is bed time, out side to potty. Any ideas on how to break him? I can not trust him outside off leash . If the gate gets open by accident he would just run from us..I need help |
I'd recommend you read this pdf book, there is great training info and a chapter on "Come". Dog's don't have any clue what "come" means unless you teach them. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...info-pics.html |
This is how I taught my girls to come You should have some treats on hand. Go up to him when he's calm and show him the treats. Tell him to stay then back up a little. Say, "come!", very enthusiastically. If he comes give him a treat. As he gets better you can start backing up further away from him. He should get the hang of it and you'll soon be able to call for him anywhere. My babies will come to me in our yard even if there on the total opposite side of it. It just takes practice and LOTS of positive reinforcement. |
Those are both good Ideas..I will try using them for sure |
I wanted a copy...but that link didn't work for me. |
I agree with what the others said. Try crouching down, Lola won't come to me if I'm standing straight up. The trainer at petsmart said it's not uncommon for small dogs. Also tell him what you're going to do. If I just bend down to pick Lola up she'll run away, if I say "Can I pick you up?" she'll usually stand still and let me. That's how she is with almost everything, she responds much better if I tell her what's going on. |
