nervous about obedience classes I decided to sign up Lexi for obedience classes, more for the socialization than anything else. She will soon be 6 months old and doesn't have a lot of interaction with dogs besides our neighbors. One has a bichon the other a golden retriever. She will bark and growl and go crazy when they are out in the yard. She is not scared of them, she tries to run towards them. I took Lexi to the trainers house to see how she is with her 4 large dogs and she did great. She barked for a little bit, but never growled. She sniffed them and let them sniff her. Of course they are trained to be calm and relaxed around all dogs so that I'm that helped, but I don't understand why she acts the way she does around the neighbor dogs. Both of the dogs are calm and don't even bark at her. So I am nervous about how she will be with other puppies in the obedience class. Still have a couple weeks until class starts so I will be crossing my fingers all goes well. |
I've had Gina in training classes since she was very young, and the two trainers she has worked with are great trainers. I was nervous the first class and Gina kind of kept to herself, the next weekend it was like a complete different dog, Gina thinks that she's 500lbs and 10ft tall, she isn't afraid of bigger dogs, or kids, she actually likes little kids. She starts her 2nd advanced class on Saturday and I will be scheduling her good canine citizenship test for as soon as the trainer has the time to do the test. I wish you luck with your upcoming classes and I think both of you will enjoy, and learn a lot. Good luck. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork P.S. Gina is being trained to be my service dog. |
Has she "met" your neighbor's dogs? Sniffing each other and things like that. Magnus is more socialable but Zoey... Anyone/anything that's not family (parents, myself, few family members), she feels she needs to stand guard. Also, Magnus does much better with dogs his size or smaller. Have you tried socializing her with other small breeds? |

Yes, she has met them. But she seems to go on the defensive immediately with growling and barking. The other dogs just walk away from her not even barking, that's why it's weird. The one neighbor does have a smaller dog and it's the same thing. I'm just confused why she did so well with the trainer's 4 large dogs. I'm wondering if it's a territorial thing. With the neighbors she is on or close to her territory and with the trainer we were at her house at an unfamiliar place. |

Thank you. I hope she does well. Right now there is only one other puppy signed up, but I am hoping a few more will sign up before classes start. |

Seriously... the only other "dog" Zoey likes (or puts up with) is Magnus... LOL |
I hope it goes well! Keep in mind, most trainers are just amazing and can really make the group of dogs behave nicely. |
Her barking and aggressiveness towards your neighbors dogs, and none towards your trainers dogs, might be because of perceived boundaries. Your neighbors dogs are in her boundary, therefore she is guarding you and her boundaries. I hope the class goes really well for both of you, Gina has benefited very much from all the classes we have taken, so have I. Good luck. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |

I think that may be it too. When we went to the vet yesterday to get spayed there were 4 dogs in there and we sat close to one and she didn't bark or growl at all. Also, I forgot that a while ago when I took her for a walk down the road we walked by a house that had a large dog tied out in the front yard. The dog barked at us, but Lexi just ignored the dog and kept on walking. I will let you all know how she does with the classes that start in 2 weeks! |
Gina did great in her class today, there were nine dogs including Gina, three she has been through classes with before. My trainer is setting up an appointment with another trainer to give Gina her Good Canine Citizenship test soon. Gina needs this certificate to continue on to be my service dog. I'm sure yours will do great in class, and will enjoy the work. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
