I'm a horrible Yorkie mommy!! I brush teeth every day and comb out lady beards every day so how did I miss this??? Macy has been scratching at her mouth and dragging her mouth on the carpet for a couple of months. Her breath also could knock you out. I thought she had a bad tooth even though she just had a dental 4 months ago. This morning I found out why I think she has been miserable. Where her hair meets her gum line was a ball of food about the size of a pea stuck in her fur. OMG this has been where the stench has been coming from!!! I groom her myself and thought I was cleaning that area well. I also thought I was combing that area good because the mustache comb never pulled. I think the comb was going right over the glob of food. I had to soak the area in warm water until I could break up the lump and finally used her face shampoo to wash the area. She hasn't scratched at her mouth yet. I feel so bad I missed this and she has been itchy. |
aww well try not to beat yourself up to much. glad you found it and now you will know to double check...it is hard sometimes with all the hair. at least her teeth are ok and now you know why. |
I am so glad it wasn't a tooth but I don't understand how I missed that big of a glob of dried food all of this time. She has wonky teeth and her upper canines hang out of the side of her mouth. The food was stuck under where her canine tooth fits outside of her gum line. I wish she could have told me why her mouth was itching. |
trust me I understand......I wish they could tell me things all the time. at least going forward you know and it wont happen again. tell her no more food ball hording. ;) |
Maybe she was saving that ball of food for emergency? LOL Glad you found the source of the problem. And it's always better late then never. This is one of the reasons why I like to keep their hair short and run my fingers EVERYWHERE every once in a while. Just out of curiosity, how did you spot it after all this time? |
I was brushing her teeth and she just moved a certain direction and I spotted the food matted in her hair. At first I thought it was a huge knot in her hair and then saw all the food that had collected down to the skin. It was gross. |
Easy fix!! So glad it wasn't a tooth! Oh and better food than these stupid stickers we have in our grass here. I call them cacaburs (I know I spelled that worng). Hannah is rarely outside but my other dogs bring them in the house. If there is one you can bet Hannah will walk or roll on it. I spend more picking them off my dogs than I want to not to mention sweeping and picking them up off the floor. We take good care of our immediate yard to remove them but with 75 + acres it's impossible to get them all. I usually do a smell check on all my dogs at least once a week. Also lets me know when it's bath time. We moms...what we do for our furbutts. |
