Never thought I'd say this .. I think I need to rehome my dog :(
 

I've had my Morkie for 3 1/2 years. I adore him, but we had a baby recently and he just isn't the center of our world anymore. Unfortunately, this little guy needs someone who can devote lots of time to him. The thing is, he has had an allergic skin condition for pretty much his entire life. We have tried EVERYTHING - we even see a special canine dermatologist and he is currently on a medication that isn't even on the market yet.

His condition causes itching and makes his fur very thin. He also becomes obsessed with hot spots, which means he has to wear a thin shirt that covers his trunk at all times. His condition also causes him to smell pretty ripe, and I'm tired of my house smelling bad despite our best efforts. We have spent so much time and money battling his condition and the ensuing infections and issues that we can't continue doing it, especially now that we have a baby. If we didn't have the baby, we'd definitely put up with all of it, especially since he's such a sweetheart and we love him so much, but it's just too hard now.

My question is this: do you think there's even anywhere out there who'd be willing to take him? He's under 4 years old, a TOTAL lover, and very very sweet. He's housebroken, not at all aggressive, loves sitting on laps, and adores people - sometimes I think he'd happily go off with any stranger who showed him affection. I'm afraid of trying to finding him a home and not finding takers when I disclose his problems. I don't even know how I'd go about finding him a new home.

He deserves a family that can make him the center of their world. Help?

He certainly does. Contact a Yorkie rescue, tell us what town/city your in and we/I will help you find a good Rescue, please.

Do you think someone would want him with all his health issues? I wouldn't give him up unless I was sure the new family would take care of him as well as we have.

You sound like you are at your wits end and need some help. Hang in there..... :(

Ursula, yes, I do. Most rescues have excellent fosters and there are people who would adopt. I honestly would take a pup like yours, I'm just not $ capable right now. There are some good folks here who will be on from rescue shortly with advice.

Poor fella, I had a poodle, a cute little brown poodle named Chips. She had the same skin issues. I took her to the dog derm doc. and he said put her on a venison based diet only. That really helped her a lot. I hope you have given this dog excellent anti-allergy food. Try the venison. It is very good for allergy pron dogs. Choose wisely when you give him away. All Yorkies are precious and need only the best loving homes.

Did the venison help with the stinkiness? The smell is really wearing on us! We've been up and down the road with all different kinds of foods and restricted diet, for months at a time.

As for a food suggestion all of mine are on Royal Canin Hydrolized Protien RX food. Have you tried feeding an allergy food? It really worked for us very well.

We've tried multiple allergy foods, including bland and ingredient-restricted foods (which he hated!). We spent months on an elimination diet prescribed by the vet. I feel fairly confident at this point that his issues aren't related to his food.

I would definitely recommend that you contact Yorkie Haven. Linda gave you the contact information. They will be able to foster your dog and find the perfect home for him that can take care of his needs.

We may not be able to foster the pup, but we will help find a reputable rescue. We get surrenders all of the time that we cannot take, but we have a member who has a lot of contacts and she will help her.
