first shot five weeks weighs 11 oz Breeder just told me they are getting first shots today. They will be five weeks tomorrow. Mine weighed 9.38 oz last week on Sunday.I am worried about him. Is this too soon given his weight? |
It's too soon given his age. Immunizations will be pretty much useless at this point because he is still being protected by passive immunity from the dam. He won't be capable of mounting an active immune response for another few weeks. I thought you said on another thread that he was already 6 weeks old and had received his shots already. Also, I see you are in Florida. Did you know that it is illegal to sell a puppy prior to 8 weeks there? Age to Sell Puppy Table |
Oops, ignore the part of my reply where I asked about a previous post. I was confusing you with another poster who brought a 6 week old puppy home yesterday. Sorry for the misunderstanding. |
This is too young, and will not support immunity at all, bc of the immaturity of the immune system. First shots should be given around 9-10 wks. See vax schedule here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post4450002 |
Just got text from breeder. It's a parvo shot. He won't get his first s**t til seven weeks. Is there a weight they have to reach before they can have their first shot or do they adjust for that? |

As far as weight, I don't know that answer...it usually goes by age bc that determines the maturity of the immune system. |
i think I also read something about not doing combination shots, and what about Lepto. I am so confused so many opinions which one do I follow? |
If the shot the breeder is giving for parvo, is NeoPar, that is fine...it is usually given when the puppies are 3-4 weeks old, to provide a bridge of immunity until their puppy shots are started at 8 weeks old. NeoPar is not affected by maternal antibodies. As far as specific puppy shots go, you can go by Dr.Dobbs protocol for puppy shots....as far as Lepto goes, you need to know what the incidents of Lepto cases in your area have been. Is is prevalent in your area? You base your decision on that. We give the core vaccines...Lepto is not an issue here so my dogs do not get vaccinated against it. If you have to give it, preceed the injection with a shot of Benadryl at the vet office, wait 20 minutes, give the vaccinations, then hang around the vet office for 20-30 minutes to be relatively sure your pup will not experience anaphylactic shock. |
