Potty help for butch! Butch is 2 years old, we rescued him as a stray several months ago, he had no collar, no chip and we put up signs etc, posted on our local facebook page. No responses, . We had him neutered, got all shots and heart worm, but we are still having issues with him marking in the house and evidently he was never potty trained by whoever owned him before because he also makes #2 in the house, we have tried kennel at night, take him out and will walk for 1/2 hour. NOTHING! We come back into the house and plop spray right on my carpet! I had a professional carpet company come out and they put extra deodorizer and a spray for pet odors down. I also bought a bottle of the deodorizer. I am lost are all Yorkies this difficult to train. He goes outside at least 5 times a day and maybe makes potty once, Which we praise him and give him a treat telling him what a good boy he is, but he still plops inside 3 times a day at least!!!! Help. I love my baby so much but my husband is not as patient as me.:( |
Is he marking everywhere or just certain spots each time? 1. Potty training spray (This is a hit or miss. For me, it helped when I was training Magnus. Not so much with Zoey) 2. Pee pad (But this might confuse him later on if you're trying to train him to go outside eventually) 3. Try taking him out every hour. Especially after a hard play time and after naps if he takes any. 4. Other than the deodorizer, you might want to think about investing in a spot cleaning vacuum like one of Bissel's spot cleaner. (I have one and very happy with the purchase.) Yorkies are notorious for being difficult with potty training but not all are like that. Magnus was trained to potty on the pad in few weeks. Zoey took almost a year. Good luck! |
Since he was an older intact male and was used to marking I would get a belly band. At least it would save your furniture and carpet..I used diced up hot dogs..when he goes I make a really big deal out of it..make sure you carry them with you and give him some as soon as he goes. Good luck |
I would try tethering him in add'n to what you're already doing. Have you gone to our General Training forum and checked out the potty training guides we have in there...there are some good ones... |
I would first like to thank you for taking this baby in that someone didn't want, maybe it was because they could not house break him, some ppl will just toss a dog out for this reason, they feel a pedigree dog will find a home faster. I know your boy is 2 y/o, but this is how I trained my 4(I didn't have 4 at the same time it was always a new baby every 3 years) puppies AFTER they were 100% paper trained age 5 months old (there were no wee wee pads then lol) Every morning at 7:30AM I walked them, even tho they didn't make I was consistent with the walking time. I also worked, came home at 4PM, walked them again. It took 2 weeks of walking with them not doing anything but sniffing every inch of their 30 minute walk. Week 3 they started to pee and poop, in the middle of the street, like a nut, I did the happy dance, clapped my hands, picked them up, kissed, hugged, and praise, praise, praise, at 7 months old they were 100 house broken. They were given a 30 min. walk at 7:30AM again at 4:30PM and at 10PM I would just take them curb side for their last pee pee, then it was bed time. Walk time must be the same time every day, rain, snow, sleet, consistency is the KEY WORD. If he makes or not, time of walk must be consistent, it will take more time because he is older, but dogs are creatures of habit. I have my first male, I adopted him 6 months ago, he is now 3 y/o old and neutered, I have his medical papers from prev. owner, he was neutered as a puppy, he squats when he makes pee pee, no making. I know his marking in the house is extremely frustrating, but it is fixable, he can be taught to potty outside, that is your job, but, it has to be consistent, even on a day when you are sick or the weather is bad. If you do not work walk him 3 times a day, 2 times if you work, and a fast pee pee just before you go to bed. Please do not give up on him, no matter how much hair you are pulling out of your head, it is fixable, you will need a lot of patience, the reward will be an over whelming amount of love from a very awesome breed. He needs you. |
