After puppies Hello everyone. As some of you know, I recently acquired a retired breeding female Biewer. She had her puppies in March so it has almost been 3 months. I was told that it takes them approximately 3 months to get back to their old selves but was wondering how long it takes and how do I know when she has reached her ideal weight. I took her to the vet for her checkup and shots but unfortunately had a "brand new" vet who didn't go over many specifics with me. She said that Summer weighed 8.6lbs which was good. The thing that I am worried about is that I can still feel the bones in her spine when I pet her. That makes me think that perhaps she needs to gain some more weight, however I have no idea how much she should actually weigh. I am currently feeding her twice a day and good food as she seems to be hungry. Does feeling her spine indicate she still has weight to put on? |
I'm so glad to hear Summer is doing good in her new home. I can feel the spine on both of my girls if I run my hand down their back. My vet told me both are at a good weight and he would rather have them on the lean side than the "hefty" side. What I noticed him looking at was their ribs. I can feel their ribs if I run my hand down their sides but I can't see their ribs. Hope Summer continues to thrive and enjoy new home. |
IMO, you should be able to feel the bones. However, IF the dog was shaved, you should not be able to see the outline of the bones through the skin. As long as the skin isn't sunken around the bones making them stick out, it sounds like she is fine, good job, new momma! |
If you google "ideal weight for dogs" and click on the images, you can see picture charts. I know some dogs that LOOK like they're really underweight but actually, they're in perfect condition. My two are bit on the "plump" side so I need to put them on a diet or something... -_-; |
Thanks everyone. I don't feel Wallee's spine although at 12lbs I still see a very distinct waistline on him so wasn't sure if it was normal to feel a spine. I know she looks to eat twice a day still and I just make sure that I make her breakfast a small meal and then feed her again when Wallee eats at supper. She is 8.6 and on the site where she was posted before having pups she was 7lbs so I am sure she is probably close to where she should be now at 4 and after having pups. |
