To Visit In Hospital Or Not To I'm between a rock and a hard place right now and need some help deciding what to do. My 11 month old had to have emergency surgery yesterday to remove a blockage in his intestines because he ate something he shouldn't have. He's been there for about 24 hours now and we're told he will be there for at least another 24. He's doing well and we're allowed to visit, but should we? I know he'll be happy to see us if we go, but will be sad when we leave. I know he will cry once we turn the corner. I don't want the spike and drop in mood to affect his recovery, but seeing us might lift his spirits too. What would you do? |
I would be there in a second to visit. |
I am torn- they say a dog doesn't know time and can't tell the difference whether it's been ten minutes or ten days. Based on that scenario I would say no, but I know I would miss them and be worried about them and want to see them. So, all I can say is follow your heart and do what your gut tells you. Thinking of your baby and praying for a quick recovery. I think all yorkies think they are billy goats and can eat anything...mine got a string from a rope toy caught on the back of the throat and they had to go in with tongs to get it freed. Luckily no surgery was involved. He will be home before you know it. Maybe take in a piece of clothing from you and have the nurse put it in his crate so he gets your scent... |
I would do whatever feels right to you...I don't think there is a right or a wrong answer. I can see both arguments to go/not go |
It really depends on the dog. I work in a vet clinic and sometimes it does a lot of good for the dog to see its family and other times, it can make things worse. I'm sure you really want to see him but if he's doing okay and doesn't seem depressed, I would say don't visit. A lot of times, they will get really excited and anxious after their family leaves and if he's just had major surgery, you don't want him upset and jumping around. If he's depressed, then a visit may do him good. I would talk to the vet or techs that have been taking care of him and ask them what they think. I hope he's feeling better soon. |
I would visit and say as long as possible. |
I would definitely go as well. When one of my babies, Mack, was very I'll, I truly believe our visits just sitting with him, rubbing his ears, talking to him, etc. is what ultimately helped him pull through. These little ones need their "mommies" and "daddies"! Hope you got to go! |
Visit, because even though you leave, he knows you will be back! |
When my little man Pao was in ER, I visited couple times a day, enough to let him know I will be there for him but not enough to interrupt his rest. They do get worried and I think they do learn that they have to stay there to get better so I say visit just not do the baby voices to get him riled up. |
I think I would |
Tough one....I'd probably go visit, but it would break my heart to then leave. I'd bring something along that you've recently worn - like a tshirt - and leave it there with him so he has something that smells like you :). |
