New Yorkie Parent ..Help I'll be picking up my first yorkie ever on Friday, he will be 6 or 7 weeks old he'll receive his first shot right before I pick him and has started To weaned from his mother Sunday. Is there anything major I need to Do or know for when my new baby comes home ? I'm super excited After a miscarriage he is exactly what I need. |
welcome to yt!! I am so so very sorry for your miscarraige. Is there a reason your picking him up so young?? most babies should stay until at least 12 weeks as they learn a ton from their mommas up until that point. he is really young so I would be prepared with nutracal...incase there are low blood sugar issues which are very common in that age range. I would insist he only receives one vacc and take him back to your vet in 1 month for his next vacc...I find my react a lot better with each one spaced out. I would also make sure you have a vet appointment lined up to be sure he is ok and everything is good with his health. I am not trying to scare you just want you to be fully prepared.. just in case. :) |
Welcome to YT. I'm sorry for your pain. As for your puppy I think, if it were me, I would ask your breeder to hold it till it 12 weeks. They still need their momma till then. Even if it cost me a little extra, it will benefit the puppy. Most good breeders insist on waiting till 12 weeks. |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! CONGRATS on your fur kiddo! I'm sure he will be just adorable. If I were, I'd wait to pick him until he is 12 weeks old. 6-7 weeks is truly way too young, and they are way too vulnerable at this delicate age - we've seen people here tragically lose their little puppies bc they've picked them up too young and the worst happens...I don't want you going through another tragic loss :(....and I am so sorry for your loss. |
Your pup really needs to stay with it's mom until 12 weeks you are taking him far to young. Also if the shots are given to close to them still nursing from there mom then it's useless. |

IMO I prefer to do my vacs one at a time. he should not go outside until he is fully vaccinated anyway but I don't really know if it is harmful..imo one shot at a time is best but I am not a breeder and have no clue how they actually do the vacs on babies before they go home. I would stress having a vet appt the day you get him or the very next day... |
I'm picking him up at 12 on Friday, and already have a vet appointment for him at 4 the same day. I do want to ask, should I mix in some of the food the breeder is giving him to some of the food I'll be giving him , that way he gets a little taste of both and won't just jump over to new food. ? |
yes for sure and it should be for 5 to 7 days that you keep mixing the old food and new food together and in the last 3 days make the old food less and less....at least that is how I do it with my babies. |
I would not change his food right away, get the brand and feeding schedule from the breeder and continue for a few weeks until he's settled in. Changing his ffood put stress on him and will upset his bowels. He will already be stressing from being away from his momma and litter mates. Try to get a toy that has momma scent or litter scent on it to make it easier on him if possible. You will probably free feed him at first so he doesn't get a dip in sugar. good luck Don't let him touch the ground outside until the vet says I is okay because of parvo. |
Sorry about the lose of your baby, I recieved my yorkie pup at 6 weeks old and she has done just fine. She was the only surviving pup, she didnt have any of her shots so I took her to the vet and also found out she was full of round worms, very gross but also very easy fix with medicine. The best of luck |
Just had Max to vet for loose stool He has had his 3 puppy shot. The last one 4 weeks ago. Now they are adding a new shot in Illinois. 4 weeks after last shot they get an adult shot then nothing for 1 year except he will get the rabies in 4 more weeks |

I brung my puppy home at 8 wks because of the distance of the drive when I took the deposit. I fell in love and talked the breeder into letting me take her home. Well two days later I had to take her back because she kept looking for the nipple on my other dog and wouldn't eat. Thank god she was ok. Now she is sooooo BIG. |
