My yorkie acts like a cat…? Long story short, my boy was living in a household with cats before we got him. I guess he liked to spend more time with the cats than with his siblings? He's picked up some cat like behaviors that have me worried. I accidently bought a cat nip toy from petco because it was the only small one, and it's his favorite toy despite the other ones we have gotten him. He has almost ripped all of the legs off. Other than that, he has an obsession with playing using his paws, like a cat does. He also likes to go into tight spaces, and walks on the edge of the couch. Once he is on the couch, he tries to climb further up on the top of the backrest, which is narrow and he will obviously fall. He fell once from the edge, which is what got me concerned. Yet he continues his cat ways. If he is able to climb onto the couch in the future, who knows what he will do. How can I correct this behavior? |
how old is your pup? |
I think you have a yorkie! ;) My crew have these same behaviors. Play with their toys with their paws, climb up the back of chairs and the couch. We immediately tell them down, and they sulk and come down. Tight spaces as well..... The main concern you should have is the climbing as these guys can "break" easily. Just be consistent in correcting him when he climbs. About the toy....Im not at all sure about this, but is catnip bad for dogs?? Anyways, good luck!!! |
My little nearly 4 month old little girl acts like that too....She is the only daughter of my 3 yr old Teapot Lou Lou. She is always lying on the top of our settee . She sometimes plays like a cat too and we have no cats in our household just 2 large Irish setters. She hides in small spaces too when she teases the 'big' girls. She is the smallest dog I have ever had at just over 3 1/2 lbs....I don't think its anything to worry about Shirl |
My girl too! She washes her face by licking her paws just like a cat... She is always on the back of our couch. Stresses me out! |
Yup, mine has always acted like a cat, since the day we brought her home. She was 8 weeks old and would crawl up to my shoulder and curl around my neck. It feels so good. She'll cuddle and we'll rub heads together. My DH thinks we're both abnormal. She also jumps like a cat when she plays. My very first Yorkie and I love her so much!!! So I guess it is definitely a Yorkie trait. :) |
I think those are adorable actions for the yorkies. Never heard of them behaving that a way. I had a tiny toy poodle that used to love to get on the back of couches and chairs too so maybe small dogs like to do that. He also used to get in the rear window of our car when we took him with us. So cute. |
I think all small dogs share cat traits. Your dog might prefer the cat toy because it's small. All of mine have loved being on the back of the couch/chairs and squeezing into small places, although the yorkies are/were braver than the poodles. I call Lola a cat frequently because she likes to rub against and between my legs like a cat and she makes some weird cat-ish noises. Quote:
