Rescued Parti Yorkie Hello everyone! I'm new here, but thought it was necessary to join YorkieTalk because I'm a devoted Yorkie lover. I rescued a 12 week old AKC registered Parti Yorkshire Terrier from a negligent breeder. When I was finally able to bring him home ... It was my main priority to cut his obviously damaged coat to promote new healthy hairs to grow (current hair was growing out frizzy from the root), getting rid of the three different types of parasites that inhabited his little 1.8 (Giardia, Coccidia and Ear Mites) and helping him realize that not all humans are evil! He's been with me for a total of two weeks now and in those short two weeks, he has been treated for all three parasites, gotten his vaccinations and on a better diet (I feed him Blue Buffalo Freedom Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Puppy Dry Dog Food). He's adjusting perfectly and I'm starting to see that Yorkie flare in him! He's getting plenty of playtime, obedience training and exercise. Does anyone have any tips for what could help with getting his health to what it should have been? I'm really worried about the little guy because he's so tiny. Any tips that could help with his health and/or coat would be great! Thank you all :) |
Hi and WELCOME to YT :)! Congrats on your new baby! And bless your heart for rescuing him and taking such good care of his health...it sounds like he really needed some major TLC. As far as how to get him back on track...my biggest concern is that he had giardia; these wreaks havoc on the small intestine, most especially in puppies, they're very vulnerable to longer-term effects due to giardia (mushy poos, grainy poos, mucus etc). If I were you, I'd give a probiotic for a good 6mths at least - I like the one from Natures Farmacy: DOGZYMES® Probiotic Max – 1 Pound » Natures Farmacy Inc. Would love to see a pic of your kiddo! |
My exact concern! His poo has hardened quite a bit ... I've been feeding him a little bit of organic plain yogurt. Hopefully that helps! I have an album on my site! Please check it out :) |
I feel as though I also rescued my baby from a negligent breeder. My boy was also filthy and luckily no parasites but a nasty ear infection. He was also very malnourished which I believe led to his broken leg when he jumped off the couch. But that is behind us now... He had to have surgery and 12 weeks in a soft cast... So plz be careful with your baby until you feel that he is healthy. The good food really helps improve the coat. I also drizzle a tiny amount of olive oil on his food once a day and I think it really helps with the coat. I also give him some tuna a few times a week mixed in with the dried food and sweet potato. Also a small teaspoon of cottage cheese once a day for added calcium. Other than nutrition, daily brushing can help stimulate follicle growth and it gets them used to the brushing for when the hair is longer. I also wouldn't recommend bathing too frequently. Maybe every 3-4 weeks if you must. The natural oils in the coat is very important for new hair growth in my opinion. I use baby wipes once a day to clean his face and wipe out his ears, followed with the brushing. I have already had to trim my boys hair twice (with scissors) because it has improved so drastically and growing in so nicely! Good luck and welcome to yorkie talk! I have found it so helpful with concerns that I have had! |
