Help, Gunner loves to run! This is the second time Gunner got out the door. The first time he got on the road! This time his daddy was around to help me catch him. All of his training goes out the window as soon as he gets out that door. He runs as fast he can around anything he can. I put a gate up from the kitchen to the laundry room and close it before I opened the door, he squeezed through. I'm going to get him micro-chipped but how do I prevent him from getting out and how do I get him to do a recall when he is that crazy about running around? |
Callie was bad about that as a pup it took a year to get her to not go out the door. I would get a gate he can't squeeze through or put mesh or something like chicken wire on the one you have. Does he have a fenced in area he can run in outside? |
We put a leash on our puppy before we even open the door. He hasn't run into the street yet but he loves to run and it takes forever to catch him. |
My Lexi was a runner too. She got out twice, once running into the street and she is fast. Luckily my husband was there to help catch her and no cars were coming at the time. That was when I realized I had to teach her not to run out the door. Surprisingly, it only took me one day. I use the "stay" command right before I am going to open the door. She will just watch me as I open the door, but will stay a good distance away. I don't keep the door opened long though, because I still don't completely trust her! |

Very good video indeed! But I prefer training without treats or clicks, for you do not know if they are always going to be availabe. I taught Cayo respond to the "stay" command, so anytime I open a door, (any door), I give the command and waited for him to respond. If he stood still I gave and still give a praise. He responds to it, but you have to be consistent and do it always. You can start with the harness on. Now he stays when I say even though doors are open. A very good book is "Teach Your Dog 100 English Words" by Michelle Welton, link here: http:// http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/books/TYD.html |
My little a Prada does that too..she takes off like a rocket. So I got the leash that u stick in the ground. It reaches 20 ft. I leave the leash up to the door step, carry her to the door and attach it and she can run like crazy up to 20ft...lol...it's sooo funny |
