good info to get if buying first dog from breeder? Hi guys new here and im thinking of purchasing a new yorkie from what i believe is a reputable breeder from yorkhouse kennels from Ab. ive done quite a bit of research but just wanted some more input from you veterans haha. what are some good questions to ask when i go and meeet the pup and talk with the breeder? i just want to make sure im doing my due diligence ! thanks |
I hope you find your baby. Purchasing from a reputable breeder makes all the difference in the world. I also hope this helps you. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html |
First, research the breeder's name. When looking for my new pup (who I get soon) I found lots of info about specific breeders. Make sure the breeder doesn't have bad reviews. One of the biggest thing I found is cheaper usually isn't better. I paid a lot more for my new girl than I wanted to but after researching the breeder I think it will be well worth it in the end. Ok a few questions to ask. 1. What age do they let pups go to new owner? 2. Will they let you see the mom and dad? 3. Can you see the kennel? 4. Do they offer a health guarantee? 5. Is the pup vet checked? Gosh, I can't remember what all I asked. If I think of more ill post. |
thanks for your responses guys! if you don't mind me asking babygirl Rosie, how much did you get your pup for? im just trying to get a range in my head of whats considered "cheap" and beware and whats considered "outrageously pricey" and then whats considered "fair". from what ive asked of breeders, some go for 1200 up to 5000. |

I didn't have to ask too many questions because she told me before I even had a chance to. You can ask for references if you like. And if they interview you that's a good sign because they care about what type of home they are going for. And if you see that they participate in conformation and members of the local/national breed and kennel clubs. |
Here are a couple threads to read: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...ant-puppy.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html |
A reputable breeder usually will charge anywhere from $1100.00 to $1500.00 for a pet quality puppy. A good breeder usually rates the quality of their pups as pet, breeder, or show quality. Avoid people who are selling pups for inflated prices and claiming that they are "teacup," "mini," or some other form of extra small Yorkie. That would not be a "reputable" breeder and could represent someone who may have some questionable stock. The links given above give some good advise. You can also go to the AKC website and look up AKC sanctioned conformation clubs. They usually have a breeder referral person who can point you in the right direction as far as reputable breeders in your area. Learn the right questions to ask so that you have some background information to lean on when you speak to the breeder. American Kennel Club - Club Search and Directory A good breeder will have a lot of background information about the dogs they breed and will be able to show it to you. A good breeding program involves a lot of study in the genetics of the breed and the line they are working with. Genetic testing is really important and hopefully your breeder can show you the tests done and is able to explain what they represent. |
As you live in Canada, one website to go to, is www.cyta.ca they do have a list of breeder members, who you can contact to see if a) this breeder is a member and or b) if the breeder members have knowledge of this particular breeder. I think that a healthy pup with good structure coming from Canadian Champions should command even in Alberta at least $1200 prox. For this I would want a meaningfull health guarantee, and some assurance that this breeder is knowledgeable enough and willing to support their puppy buyers after the purchase. IMO $5000 is way way too much to pay for a pet dog - that is more in line with a show quality dog. I would check as well as I am able the selling prices for Yorkies in Alberta from show champs, as where I live, the most expensive city in Canada things here go for more $$. Good luck with your search. |
Pet quality from Canadian Champions should go for 1200.00 to 1500.00. 5000.00 would be show quality. Breeders are not sold much in Canada, they usually breed only from Show Champion stock, if a good show breeder. They never sell breeding stock to anyone but another show breeder. Anyhow that is how I have seen it done through out the years I was in the dog game. |
