Need Help! Allergic to Yorkies? Hi, We had a Chihuahua for years without a problem until he passed away last winter. Ready to add a new addition, I purchased a Maltese from the in-laws, however one of my family members was severly allergic to it. Would a Yorkie's coat be considered similar to a Maltese's? The "allergy free" dogs tend to cause him the most problems. |
I would find someone that has yorkies and have your family member around them before buying. |
hmmmm, that is interesting..... i am allergic to dogs, but dont seem to be allergic to my yorkie  (i know my allergies are still present because i go around my moms house and i am all congested ect) ive never heard of it being the OPPOSIT though.. I have heard that the "hypo allergenic" dog is just a myth, true the yorkies dont have an undercoat but it is still hair right???? i dunno what is true, all i know is that my allergies seem to be okay with yorkies (i dont know about maltese.. ive never been around one of those before) ive been around a wheaten terrier and dont have allergies with them.... anyone else who knows? |
My allergies are ok with Yorkies too! |

This is really good advise. Try to be around as many Yorkies as you can. But also remember that it might possibly be the grooming products on the Yorkies or other Breeds also that might cause an allergic reaction?? But, Id hate to see you miss out on owning such a wonderful Breed as a Yorkie, so it's worth hanging out with as many as you can. I do hope you find no sniffles around them and can be owned by such a beauty!! |
My sister is VERY allergic to dogs but shes fine when she comes here. She plays with Lady and Jess and shes never got teary or congested like she would with other dogs.I heard that yorkies are a good breed to chose if you have allergies and want a pet. I agree that maybe you should find someone who has a yorkie and hang around for a while to see what happens,I think it will be ok. |
I have allergies to dogs (and cats) and I'm 100% fine with Loki. I knew that ahead of time as a friend has a Yorkie. I was also OK with her Shih-Tzu. Honestly, I've been around a Maltese only once and I remember being allergic to it, but I swear it's not possible because they have the same kind of hair. All I can say is maybe the Yorkie they were around was not taken care of or had doggie or kitty brothers and sisters? Sometimes bad food can cause a sort of doggy odor. I don't know what to tell ya, freshly bathed Yorkie is pretty hard to be allergic to! ETA: Poodles and Bichons are supposed to be easy on the allergies, and I am allergic to both. Also my little cousin has terribly bad asthma and severe allergies and he is fine at my house. He loves dogs too, and I love that he can play with Loki without getting sick. |
pet allergies If you are allergic to a Maltese you will likely be allergic to Yorkies or other hypoallergenic dogs. The problem is that you are allergic to the dog dander which all dogs have regardless of breed. Some may be a little worse some may not have as much. Dander is just the normal shedding of skin that all mammals including humans do. People allergic to dogs like German shepherds, Labs etc are allergic to the actual hair which is different from nonshedding dogs. If you are allergic to shedding breeds of dogs but not Yorkies, Maltese etc, it is the fur you are allergic to. Lorraine Loriben Yorkies |
