I am a new puppy owner. I have had dogs in the past, but they have come to me around a year to two years old. Well last night I freaked out. I noticed a small amount of blood on Molly's
toy. My husband, son I checked Molly from head to paws and nothing. We then got Molly to open her mouth and noticed a back tooth was gone. I got on the Internet asp and found out that Molly is losing her baby teeth. I would of never of thought dogs had baby teeth and adult teeth. What kinds of toys do you all suggest I buy a teething Molly?:animal36

Don't feel bad about not knowing, back (9 years ago now) when DH brought our GSP home the same thing happened to me. I had never had a pet before and it had never occurred to me that dogs lose teeth like that. I've since met people that have had dogs their entire lives and never noticed it, because the dogs usually swallow the teeth.

LOL I freaked out the first time too. One of the things Magnus liked chewing on was the small baby towel, soaked in water, and then freeze.

Do you know about Yorkie's predisposition to dental problems? The breed is renown for getting gum disease, caries, tooth abscess, early tooth loss and retaining many of their baby teeth, which often have to be removed by the vet. Most of them need to have their teeth and gumlines professionally cleaned under anesthesia at least once a year, together with daily toothbrushing using dog toothpaste as human toothpaste can be harmful or fatal to dogs if it has fluoride or xylitol in it. My little boy lost 4 of his permanent teeth and had several retained baby teeth removed a few weeks after I got him at age 9 mos. as he'd eaten a very poor diet at his breeder's, his teeth had a brown coating all over them and his retained baby teeth had set up tooth decay between them and those 4 permanent teeth. Since he recovered from that cleaning/tooth removal, I've taught him to accept regular tooth brushing and he's lost no more permanent teeth. If you notice, many older toy dogs have tongues hanging out or partially showing because they have lost so many permanent teeth due to poor dental care by their owners and vet.

I'd ask my vet about any retained baby teeth to be sure they don't cost him any permanent teeth.
