Too small?? Hi everyone!! My baby boogie is already 4 months old going 5 this coming June 9. He is only 2.86 pounds. When I had him checked up, the vet said that his body looks fine. Is it possible that he is a 'teacup' yorkie? What can I do to further increase his weight? Im feeding him royal canin yorkshire terrier puppy mix. I don't want him to be small :( Do you guys have anything in mind? |
There is no such thing as a "teacup yorkie" - that's just a marketing term. The correct term is just "yorkie" and the standard for a yorkie is to be 7 lbs or less....so you have a standard yorkie - he's just on the small side. There isn't anything you can do to affect/change his ultimate growth level - it's genetic. Are you worried bc of safety reasons? |
7 lbs and under is standard weight for yorkies anything over 7 lbs is out of standard for weight but it's still a yorkie. There are no subclasses :-). My Rasta weighs less than your pup at 2.3 lbs and I've been attempting to fatten him up even though our vet says he's fine. I like to give cheese, veggies, fruit, and cottage cheese during the day between his 3 meals and he's putting on HEALTHY weight. |
If the vet said his body weight appeared normal for his size then I wouldn't try to feed him anymore than what he is accustomed to. He is just a little smaller and you sure don't want to make him fat. |
Be concerned with building muscle mass, not weight per say. He might be in the range of 5.5 - 6.6 pounds dependent upon his boney structure. Feed the right calories per day for his exercise level. Weigh him weekly if his weight is a concern to you. |

Thank you for that information. Im worried that his weight might affect his overall health. Im afraid that he might be developing some sort of health issues |
Well my pebbles is even smaller than your pup. At 6 months they told me she was too small to be spayed at 1 pound 9 ounces. She is now 6 1/2 months and in 2 weeks I have managed to but 8 ounces on her so she is now around 2 pounds 1 ounce. I cook her a little boiled chicken without seasoning and of course she is free fed. My vet says she doesn't look skinny just sall. Lol. Let her tell it she is a pitbull or something..... |
Hi, You're feeding your pup a great food. Royal canin is specialized for yorkies. The puppy I'm getting this July is estimated to stay small too, about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. Her siblings weight is estimated to be between 3-4 pounds. I'd suggest an exercise pen when not around to keep an eye on the pup and not allowing it to jump off sofa or bed. |

Hi! Thank you for your reply. Aren't they allergic to chicken? Wouldn't they shed fur when fed with chicken? |
No specific breed is allergic to chicken, it's an individual issue. Also IF your Vet said maybe your baby is a TeaCup then you NEED to find a new vet as there is No such thing as a TeaCup in any dog breed. My Jazzie is only 3.4 lbs at 4 yrs old & she is perfectly healthy. You need to be very careful about putting too much wt on tiny frames. In other words, your pup will grow to be the size he was meant to be no matter how much you feed him but you never want them over wt. |
Never heard of a dog being allergic to chicken as it is surpose to be in most dog foods.... Just an old wise tale. :) I don't feed her boiled chicken everyday just once a month or so since she is picking up weight nicely. |
