Male or Female? So I am I new to the site and am going to be getting a Yorkie in a few plus months. I am wondering if anyone can help with deciding on male or female? Reasons to choose one over the other. I have read females are more territorial and independent whereas males are more loving, attentive and focused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. The traits you listed are generalizations. Not every Yorkie fits the same mold. My boys are very affectionate and attentive, but I often think they are that way because we have encouraged it. Also, Max and Teddy know that being charming will bring more outings and walks, and all of their other favorite things. :D Some people claim that one gender is easier to potty train than the other. I had no problems with the boys. Some pros for Yorkie boys: boy puppies tend to be easier to find and are usually priced less than girls. |
It depends on the dog more then whether they are boys or girls. You can search the board for lots of posts about this. I have a girl she dosent have a mean bone in her body. She is stuck to me like glue and loves everyone. She listens well and is not territorial. Very very loving. |
I have to admit I have had mostly female dogs over the years. But to be truthful I find the males to be easier to house train, more attentive and more focused. Males are usually cheaper to buy. If you are buying pet quality only. |

When I was doing Protection, males for size if used outside but females for property, such as stores or ware houses, less/easier clean up. But for pet I always prefer female, as far as traits go, the owner makes the traits, if spayed, females are much cleaner. Your experience and expectations will have more effect on personality then sex |
Get both I agree with ColesMommy01 get both. I got my boy first and any day my girl will be coming home. I say don't decide until you see the pups and see which one you make a connection with. Good luck. Happy hunting. |
I really think it all depends on how they are raised :-) I had a male and female chow, and the male was a silly goofball and loved everyone, where as the female was very smart and easy to train and a great protector of our home. It had been a few years since I had a dog so I started looking at yorkies and was looking for a female because of my previous experience with a female dog. Then a friend told me about this little boy yorkie that needed to be rescued because he was being starved to make him a so called micro by stunting his growth. Well that was all I needed to hear and I rescued him within a couple hours. He by then was in a hypoglycemic coma and the vet did not even think he would live through the night. That was when he was 9 wks old, and fast forward to now, where he will be 1 yr old on June 6th, he is the best little dog ever !!!! He's super smart, knows a ton of tricks, loves every person and animal while on his walks, yet the same great protector of our home that my female chow had. So I have had both genders of dogs with the exact same qualities :-) So my answer is, it all depends on the pup itself, irregardless of gender :-) |
Hi welcome to Yorkietalk! I agree if in doubt get both. Regarding your question, It depends on the Yorkie. I have both a female and a male. I got the male first and then the female. Evie (female) is not territorial at all, she's very loving and "my little shadow". Leroy (male) is also really loving, loves being around us but I would say out of the two he is a little more independent, and more territorial with his stuff. I think that as for advantages of female over male is there's cuter things for females as dresses, bows, etc. while for males there's less stuff. Advantages of males over females is that males tend to be priced less than females as another member already mentioned. |
I find both very affectionate, but I do think my 2 males are more affectionate than our girl. |
When I was looking for a new pup, I went for a female because I had had males in the past and wanted to use indoor potty pads and was concerned about the leg-lifting issue with the males. Others here may have more experience with this issue. |

I have had both. My female was very loving and independent. My boy is ALWAYS by my side. I can always count on him to be there. He is a great protector and lover, very affectionate. I am getting another puppy and wanted another female to replace my girl, but the litter didn't have enough females for me to get one. I took a male instead. But after thinking about it I am glad I changed my mind and getting another boy. My female was my dog until my husband got home then she was his dog. My boy was always mine and only mine. He loved his papa but I was his special person and still am :)) Good luck on your decision |
I have had 4 females all now past, they were sweet, loving and not territorial. I recently adopted a 3 y/o neutered male, he has the same personality my females had, sweet, loving. My females were 100% potty paper trained (no wee-wee pads back then) at 5 months old. 100% house broken at 7 months old, and NO accidents in the house. I would agree it depends on the dog it's self. |
