Refuse to eat Hi everyone! My baby boogie seems to stop eating from his bowl. He has a large and a small bowl but both are stainless steel bowls. I have been observing his eating patterns and he doesn't want to eat on his bowls. When I tried placing his food on the couch (NOTE: I directly placed the food on the couch without the bowl) he ate all the food. But when Im leaving him for work I'm placing his food inside his pen in a bowl. When I return from home, the bowl is empty. Is he just distracted with my presence when he is supposed to be eating? But I am not petting him when it is already his time to eat. Any ideas on this one guys??? |
I'm learning that distraction plays a role sometimes. As I type this I'm sitting next to my pup while he eats. If I don't he's ripping and running. Try sitting with him or putting him in an enclosed location with the pen or a gate for meal times. |
1 Attachment(s) He may prefer a non-metal bowl, as some do. I use a small white ceramic tart bowl like this one: |
:) Harry too won't eat (or drink!) from stainless steel - I think he can maybe see himself in the bottom, and gets a bit spooked? He doesn't really like any bowls at all  - maybe he doesn't like to feel his whiskers rubbing on the sides.... So he has his food from a flat, china plate....and his water from a low-sided, fairly shallow, wide bowl....good luck! :D |
Yes this type of bowl/plate works very well. Quote:

Try a paper plate |
Thank you all for your response! I tried isolating him and i sat beside him. He just really wants to eat out if his bowl. i'll try the plate. hope it works :( |
With my baby, if I hand feed him his first bite he will eat the rest on his own. He just needs my help to begin sometimes. I'm not sure if that is helpful or not. |
Hi Everyone! I tried feeding him this morning in a ceramic flat plate and he ate all of his food. :) Im always happy whenever he finishes his food. Maybe he really hates his bowl. Does anyone have an explanation as to why they don't like eating on their stainless steel bowl? |

I wish I knew. Mine is the same way. She will drink fine out of her ss bowl, but not eat. But if I put her food strait on the floor she will eat it all up. |

Same experience here. I place it on the floor and on the couch and that is the only way that he would eat his food. Weird but cute. Im also a little bit concerned about his weight. He is now 4 months onld going 5 months on june 9 and his weight is only 2.86 pounds. Is he too small? :( Im feeding him royal canin yorkshire terrier mix, any supplements needed? |
It can be a challenge to make them eat when you want them to at that age. I remember one time I put Cookie's wet food on my nose to get her to lick it off at about 3.5 months! Then I would have to do the "Here comes the airplane" trick that you always see mothers doing with their toddlers to make them eat yucky things like peas. Then I started spinning her food bowl on the hardwood floor, which she absolutely loves because it wobbles in addition to spinning azimuthally, making a hell of a noise. Now at 14 months she still sometimes likes me to spin her bowl for her, and she'll sometimes ask me to do it before she'll eat dinner. |
Are you using a stainless doggie bowl ? if so you may try a stainless kitty bowl as the doggie bowl is deeper & many little dogs do not like deeper bowls. All of my little ones will not eat from a deep bowl but will eat from the stainless kitty bowls I got from Petco. |

The airplane trick is so funny because I'm doing that also just to make him interested in his food. I even say "i love you and please eat" in a very very sweet voice so that he'll know I want him to eat. Sometimes I even pretended to eat his food out of the bowl and said "yum" so he'll eat. :) haha! Are they really pick eaters? |
