Martingale Collar I'm getting Mocha trained to be a Therapy Dog. His trainer suggests that I buy a martingale collar. Does anyone have any experience with martingale collars? Looks to me like Mocha's long hair will get tangled up in that collar. |
Macy just became registered as a therapy dog and we used a harness with a 4' leash. She had to wear a collar for her ID tags but leash was attached to her harness. |
Using a collar with a small breed dog is asking for collapsing trachea which has no cure. You can use a collar for tags but only tags and use a harness when hooked to the leash. My moms rescue who came to them having used a collar for 6 years now has ct and has to have medicine twice a day. My yorkie who I used a collar with for the first month or two not knowing any better has mild ct and has had to go on medication for it off and on. I can't help but think the collar had to do with it. |
A collar will irritate a collapsed trachea, but is not the cause! Collapsed trachea is a condition where the cartilage is weakened. Once, diagnosed, it is important not to walk with collars and to keep the pup's weight down which is another huge trigger. Also they should be kept calm and cool. Trainers do encourage collars but you can try a harness to see if it works. |
I think for a trained non-pulling dog, a martingale would fine, but harnesses would be ideal. I use a martingale on Jackson for quick potty breaks. |
Thanks everyone. Right now Mocha wears a collar for ID and harness with leash. I'll go talk to the trainer again and let her know that I prefer to train him with the harness instead of switching to collar/leash. Karen, thanks for letting me know I can get Mocha certified with the harness. |

Macy just became registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc but I am not sure what other organizations require regarding collars. Hopefully the organization you are working with will allow Mocha to wear a harness |

Collars do not cause CT. They make it worse. Both of my dogs have symptoms of CT, so they are walked on harnesses. I do use collars on both for potty breaks. Martingale collars are completely unnecessary for an average Yorkie. I understand the use in large dogs, but small dogs are pretty easy to control with harnesses. |
I have used the Martingale collar on all my big dogs, but can not see ever using on a yorkie. Possibly on a large yorkie like my Keno but never on a small or normal size yorkie. Just my opinion. |

I don't understand when trainers are so adamant about not using harnesses. Honestly, it's about *training*. Any dog can be trained to loose leash walk on a harness just as easily as a collar. |

We use the sense-ation harness on both of our dogs for therapy visits and obedience training. |

I've been using harnesses made by YT's Chattiesmom. She also makes harness with front ring for easy walk. Maybe I should just order from her since Mocha does great with her other harnesses. |
I gave my easy walker away and got the sense-ation harness which I am loving. The SA harness is so much better for several reasons. 1. The martingale on the EW is a fabric loop with a d-ring. Main complaint is that it tends to have a lot of give causing strap adjustments to loosen very easily so you have to constantly readjust. The SA has an o-ring, adjustments stay in place. 2. SA has less hardware so it's much lighter. 3. Softer, lighter material and better finish on the SA. The EW did a poor job of sewing their straps. The points where it's sewn is bulky and hard causing sore spots. My pup hated it and was never able to wear the harness for more than an hour without nipping at the points. 4. If the SA harness was chewed or damaged, you can send it back to the company for repair for $5. |
