Eating Grass, Leaves, Weeds and other animals poop Sophie is always eating grass, leaves and weeds when we take her outside is she lacking in something? She has also recently started to eat other dogs poop when we take her for a walk I am glad I have been able to catch her before she actually ate it. We have taken a trip to Key West, FL and she has tried eating goose pop. How do I stop this? |
you have to keep her on a short leash and watch everything. there is no other way to control being able to keep her from eating everything unless she doesn't go out at all. I would enforce positive behavior aka when you tell her to drop it/leave it and she obeys give her her favorite treat or snack something small and portable that you can carry with you every time you are out or go for walks. consistency and discipline are the key. wishing you good luck. |
Since she's a puppy she probably will put everything in her mouth. I agree with the above poster keep her on a short leash. My Rasta ised to eat poop, only our bulldogs, but he grew out of it by the time he was 8 months. Until then I just tried to watch him like a hawk and pick up our bullys poop as soon as she was done before he could get to it. |
Cookie so loved eating poop until about a year old. Thankfully she has grown out of it. |
yorkies are billy goats they will eat anything in sight. Short leash is ideal. Mine searches the yard for cat poop piles, he can spot one before I do. I used to let him without a leash, but now he leashed so I can control it better. I don't think they outgrow it, it's instinct... |
Usually not a sign that they are lacking anything in their diet. My boys do it to be rascals. Some days are worse than others. I have to keep an eye on their mouths constantly. Bunny poop and bird droppings are their favorites. I've been told that these are potential carriers of Lepto, so I discourage the licking and eating. They know when I say "icky!" that they need to move along or they are going to get a helicopter ride in their harness away from the offensive material. |
It is good to know it is not something she is lacking. I do keep her on a short lease because she does seem to eat everything in her sight. I am going to really try to push the training because she is one hard headed puppy. Thanks all! |
Amy eats anything she can find and we have to watch her very closely. Went though the poop stage and she did outgrow it. She is a bug searcher and can't always catch her when she has one in her mouth but I find it when we come inside cause she drops it in front of me. LOL |

I had no idea about the Lepto in bird and rabbit poo. I have house bunnies and very rarely will Jenna find a stray bb lying on the floor and grab it before I can reach it. I usually find it under her tongue but I give her a strong "no!" and she knows I mean it. But both my dogs like to find grouse poo (I guess because it's mostly berries and must smell sweet) and I have a time getting it out of Ebon's mouth. (She is obnoxious about anything she can swipe off the ground, not just poop, probably because we think she's part border collie and is hard to get through to.) Thank you very much for the heads up! I'll be even more vigilant. ;) |
My two like to eat grass, dirt, acorns, etc. They don't eat dog poop but they search it out and get so close to it, they could eat it in one big bite. They both like to dig in the dirt and eat it and anything they can dig up. Funny thing is, they don't dig in their own yard. They try to eat bird poop that's on the sidewalk but fortunately they know leave it...but I still have to stay on them. |
Ha ha. Buttercup loves chicken poop. I have to clean the yard before I let the chickens out, to make sure there's no dog poop, and then after I put the chickens up and let the dogs out, I clean the yard again, I always miss something, and buttercup always finds it! Not sure what's so appealing about chicken poop, but she loves it if she can get it. |
My little Prada does the same thing...look like she's looking for something in the yard right now to put in her mouth... |

I think if your bunnies are strictly indoors, there is not a concern about Lepto. |
Oh Bunny Poo! A treat at our house too. 4 acres of it :( No cure for the dreaded yucky habit here yet, just leash and distract. |
What about sticks? Mine is constantly scouring the ground and sidewalk for sticks. She will carry them like a cigarette in her mouth and when I try to get it, she crunches down and now it's several small pieces in her mouth. Our walks are 80% mouth cleaning, and 20% actual movement! Arggghh! |
