Hair Inside Ears?? So, I have 2 yorkies and a yorkie/papillon mix. The two older ones I groom on my own -- baths, brushing, minor trimming for sanitary reasons. I just discovered the youngest pup - 6mos - has hair literally growing OUT of his ears. Like starting inside of them. Is this normal? Does it need to be removed? The other two don't have hair like this. Thanks! |
Yes, this is very normal. My vet told me these should be plucked out, but some people on here will probably say it is not necessary unless these is an issue like an ear infection. My Maltese/Yorkie mix had an ear infection that I didn't catch right away because of all the hair in the ears I couldn't see all the black crusty stuff in there. Once I plucked the hair out I could see there was a problem and took her to the vet to get checked out. |
Yep. My vet says they need to be plucked so I do them myself. |
Do you just tweeze them out? It seems like that would hurt. My little guy has like huge tufts of them coming out of his ears. |
If you fold the ear back you can usually pull them out with your fingers. I thought about using tweezers once, but most tweezers have a sharp point that could harm your pup. I think they do sell tweezers that have a blunt tip if you can find them. Lexi used to hate when I did anything with her ears, but she has gotten used to it now. She still doesn't like it, and if I take too long she starts to get annoyed, but it gets easier the more they get used to it. |

The hair coming out if the ear canal itself should be pulled. It comes off easily w/your fingers. All the other hairs inside the ear needs to be trimmed w/clippers or blunt nosed scissors bc those hurt when pulled. Some Yorkies do not need their ear hair pulled @ all, but some do, esp the ones w/ a lot of hair coming out of them...to prevent ear infections. During a bath, the long ear hair will act like a wick & draw in water into the ear canal. Water inside the ear canal is a problem bc it can cause ear infections. Cleaning their ear once a week during their bath w/ a ear cleaner w/ a drying agent is a good idea too. |
I have 3 yorkies and have never pulled the hair out of their ears - I just let it be. Unless your kiddo has moist ears, gets infections or stinky ears - it's really not necessary. Just like we have hair in our ears to protect the canal, so do dogs. It's there for a reason. :) |
Yep, always pluck out the ear hair. It doesn't hurt them at all. |
