I bet people on both sides feel terrible |

The people sticking up for him would not be if it happened to their dog. Anyone's dog can escape their yard....everyone says they watch their dogs at all times; but I know that there are always times in a dog's life where it can escape. It has happened to me and I am super vigilant. |

If it were my dog I would share the responsibility. I have a 60# english bulldog and a 2# yorkie. My bully is super friendly but becomes overexcited when she meets new people. I can understand how someone would mistake her friendliness for being an attack if they're already scared of dogs and considering she has her mouth open in a perpetual grin and all one can see is her teeth :D. Also, my 2# yorkie is aggressive which is why I do keep him away from ppl but if he were to "attack" someone I wouldn't expect them to stand idly and allow him to bite them instead of defending themselves. They would literally have to leave his area or he would keep coming for them. To me size is irrelevant when it comes to what one fears. I don't think anyone so far has sided with the mail carrier some can just understand both sides. |

That is exactly what I said when I heard about it. I'm not sticking up for the mailman...he did a really stupid thing. I was just trying to explain the way a mailman feels after a dog bite. |
Wow, so very sad. I couldn't defend this mail carrier. If you're that afraid, you carry something that keeps the animal at a distance. Afterall, he doesn't know what sized of dogs are roaming a neighborhood at any given moment. You'd always be prepared if you're that afraid. He picked up a rock and smashed this little dog with it. That's so personal. :thumbdown:thumbdown |
I thought mace was 'mandatory' for mailmen. Our 15 pound cockapoo was maced by the mailman. She slipped out our front door when we were walking out, because she wanted to get at the mailman. There is something 'special' about mailmen that many dogs hate. Our cockapoo never made a peep at anyone else who came or went. Only people wearing the mail uniform. What this man did to the terrier is disgusting and completely unnecessary. As I wrote earlier, I had an intense fear of off leash dogs, including small dogs, but never even in self defense felt the urge to use force against them. I delivered newspapers when I was in grade school and racked up bites from dogs of all sizes (luckily never any serious damage). I do not dismiss people who fear my little 9 pound dogs. I also do not agree that a person who fears dogs should not have a job outdoors -- loose dogs can be anywhere. However, I think there is something distinctly wrong with a person who crushes a rock on a 10 pound dog. I think there has to more going on with this guy. |

We have traditional mailbox on a pole, but our mailman has to bring things to our door almost every day. |

Nope, I don't feel for HIS side. Get away from the dog....a 10 pound dog simply is not going to inflict that much damage. Not buying this story. And, the article said that 2 neighbors said there was no aggression from the dog. I hope he is not allowed to continue delivering mail if he has such "fears". If he is found innocent and keeps his job, I hope it is an inside job. |

I do, however, disagree with your last statement. I have been bitten by small dogs and what they did to me did not warrant my beating them to death. I am quite sure he could have done something else other than KILLING the dog......and we must remember no one heard or saw any aggression from this small dog. |
Wow, this is nauseating. I hope this guy has major consequences for this act, there's just no excuse. |

That's nice you can agree that we can disagree. I've never been bitten by a dog, thankfully. If I was I would expect the same things to be done whether its a chi or a gsd. A bite is a bite. A yorkie can bite repeatedly and cause some of the same damage it takes a Rottweiler to do in one. True the neighbor(s) said they didn't see any aggression in the dog. But what they consider friendly dog body language the carrier could have perceived as threatening. We don't know because we weren't there ourselves. What it really comes down to is if the owners were keeping an eye on their pet (and did perimeter checks as another poster stated) the whole situation could have been avoided. |
This is very sad. I feel for the people who have lost their little dog. I don't feel death was the answer. |

Chill out? What for? and what is with the eye roll? If you haven't notice I stopped posting a few hours ago. I stated my opinion and stepped away from the thread. I have my opinion and others have theirs that is what makes us human. If you can have a good argument with someone and step away from it without haven't any negative feelings about the person, then I call it a good argument. People disagree and agree to disagree and that makes life interesting. But you talking it personal by telling me to chill out when you haven't even posted your opinion in this thread, just because you don't like my opinion. Edit, I was chill but now I am not. |

Yes, the situation could have been avoided if the postman had turned and walked or ran away. That ten pound dog was not going to kill him. I have heard much worse stories about dogs and postal workers and never heard of one using a rock in such a manner. Brutal....that is what it was....BRUTAL and disgusting. I don't care if I was there or not. I don't know how the Postal Service trains their employees, but I will bet my last nickel they are not told to do something like that. I will follow this case to see what the outcome is. |

This is so sad. Chibi hates the ups guy buy the old guy would ask to pet him and say hi all the time, he was very nice. At my last job we carried air horns to break dog fights, they are very effective. Their should be more things in place to protect the mailmen and peoples pets. |
The rock is the reason why I don't believe him. If a small dog attacked me and I were afraid I'd most likely kick it or hit it with my bag. I wouldn't want to bend down to get a rock, exposing my hands and face to the dog. |
mace in most states is illegal. I know postal delivery ppl, they carry pepper spray for just this reason, aggressive, stray dogs. I agree, if this guy was so scared, I would be watching that dog, not bending down, taking my eyes off this "aggressive attack dog" and picking up a rock, then getting close enough to this "aggressive attack dog" to bash him in the head with the rock. Also agree that the act is too personal. Unless the media shouts out with very strong voices, IMO this mailman will pay NO penalty, his reasoning is "self defense". I agree with ladyjane, dogs do sometimes get away from the best of owners, but not a reason to kill a 10# dog. There were neighbors out, if the lil dog did attack the mailman those neighbors would have been there in a flash to aid the mail man, no reason to kill the dog, it could have been reported to animal control. I do hope he pays some sort of penalty. Just horrible for the ppl that owned and loved this lil guy. |
