Ear snipped while being groomed 😢 My husband was grooming our little girl and snipped here ear!!! I heard her poor little yelp from the other room and when I came out there was definitely some blood. My husband tried putting pressure on it but it kept bleeding. SO being freaked out....I took her to the vet. They bandaged her whole head (except 1 ear) and put a cone around her. She wouldn't move & she was falling over. She's hating life right now & so am I. They gave her the smallest cone they had (kitten size) & she still managed to get 1 little leg out. We took it off but now she's trying to scratch the bandage where her snipped ear is. I don't know what to do when we go to bed tonight!!! Anybody been through this?? I feel SO bad for her and don't want to wake up with her stuck in this cone or her scratching 😟 Help please.... |
I am so sorry! Your poor puppy. I'm glad you took her to the vet. Wish they had given you a pain med to maybe help calm her and not want to scratch at her ear. If it is 24 hour emergency vet, I would call and ask. For the cone -- it goes around the neck, so I'm sure what you mean about getting a leg out. I'm sorry that I do not have any suggestions about what to do tonight. When Max was at the height of his eye problems and had to wear a cone/be protected from scratching, my dad and I took turns watching over him and sleeping. In the future, no scissors near the ears! Was your husband trying to trim ear hair? Only use a trimmer, like a mustache trimmer, and always flat against the skin, never perpendicular to the edge of the skin. If your puppy is not very cooperative about sitting still, go very slowly. Always use hands to protect the face from scissors. Always work in bright light too. Best wishes for your baby. |

Thank you so much for your response Maximo!! I'm not sure what he was doing... He's been grooming both of our yorkies and has done a really good job. I did take her to the 24 hr vet and they probably thought since it wasn't a huge cut, she'd be find with the pain. She's very restless though and I'm not sure if the bandage is too tight, she's not used to it or what. I asked if it was too tight but they said if you could put a finger underneath, it's good. The whole cone thing, I think she was trying to use her front leg and it got under the cone. It's really loose on her! I'm super protective over both my babies and if 1 isn't doing well, I'm freaking out. Thank you again for your kind words and help. |
I totally understand freaking out when anything is wrong. Glad to hear it is not a big cut. The bandage probably does feel weird and that is likely what she is after, trying to scratch. I understand now what you mean about the collar, getting her leg up into it. I'm very sorry that I don't have any suggestions. :( The only thing I can think of is to try to distract her, hold her on your lap and massage her to calm her down and encourage her to sleep. Hoping someone else will think of something clever. Keep us updated on her recovery. |
So sorry for your pup and hubby, who's probably feeling bad too. Sorry it won't help tonight, but maybe you could buy or make a cloth cone. It's worth having one in the home ready before any emergencies. Pretty sure there are people on here who make and sell them. They are easier for the pup to sleep in and less noisy when they move, so not so scary. When have they said you can take the bandage off? You're a good mummy. Hope she heals fast. |
I would suggest you to be calm. I have heard that in such situations some vets put a soft scarf around the face, covering the injured area. |
So sorry about your baby....hearing this sets me back a little more about trying to do the grooming myself. My husband wouldn't even try to do it, I would be the one to do the grooming and if I cut them I don't know what I would do. Hope everything is better soon. |
Aw, poor kiddo. Poor hubby too, I'm sure he felt just awful. How did she do last night? |
Thank you ALL for caring so much! I really appreciate it! She did good last night. She was REALLY exhausted! I did catch her a couple times in the middle of the night, trying to scratch that poor ear. We were told to leave the bandage on for about 3/4 days. She's already miserable =( Plus the cone doesn't even fit! I'm praying she isn't in any pain. My husband did confess it was a chunk. He does feel extremely bad....It was an accident I keep telling him that. He adores our little girl so I know he's beating himself up. I got 2 babies I'm trying to take care of =) I know my vet will call today to check up on her, so we'll see what she says. Thank goodness my husband works from home but we're supposed to be somewhere tonight and I'm afraid to leave her! Your all are amazing!! |
I'm glad your little girl did well last night. Your poor husband. We all make mistakes when it comes to our pups, and I have beaten myself up too over things. |
Quick question: Does having styptic powder on hand help with cuts that bleed from grooming accidents, or is it just for bleeding from nail trimming? |

It would work for minor cuts and abrasions, but ears bleed really badly, as I learned from Ellie May. Her boy was injured by another dog and she had a very hard time stopping the bleeding. |
Can you buy small doggy boots for her? That should keep the scratching out of your worries. |
