Big yorkie here :) Hello, it's my first post on this forum and I am so happy I found a community like this one. I own a big yorkie, he is 14 pounds( 6 kilos) very muscular and strong too :) I went yesterday to Pet Expo, wanted to buy something nice for my baby... aaand a very "smart" lady (she was representing Hills brand food) told me that my Max is a mix yorkie because it is impossible for a yorkie to be that big... it is not the first time. Many people do not know anything about yorkies and their history and they still talk and argue with you. Please look on my pics with Maxy and tell me what do you think? I have no idea what kind of yorkie mix could he be? |
Just because he weighs 14lbs doesn't mean he is not a yorkie. Both of mine weigh 11llbs and there are some yorkies here that weigh more than that. Yorkies where originally larger and have been bred smaller. AKC standard is up to 7lbs. So much more to love! I guess that Hills representative doesn't know what she is talking about. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for your message!! I wish I could know how to argue with these people... |
Not all dogs of a breed meet the AKC breed standard of size, color, gait or temperament, head, body type, etc., and although your dog is twice as big as the typical Yorkie. The breed is placed in the Toy Dog Group due to its diminutive size and while your baby is far too large to meet the standard in that aspect, she still has the look of many AKC purebred Yorkies in your picture and seems to meets the breed standard in other aspects of breed conformation. Your baby looks like a handsome, proud, sweet-looking Yorkie girl. We have an unofficial "club" on YorkieTalk known as the "Teapot Club" for members who have big babies like yours: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...apot-club.html |
Both you and Max are beautiful. He looks all Yorkie to me. Welcome to YT. |

:Oops!!! I said "girl" when you have a "boy". He certainly seems to qualify for the YT Teapot Club. :teapot::yorkiej: |
welcome to YT, you have a beautiful YORKIE, My girl (now past) was a beautiful 17 lbs of sleek beautiful body. When ppl who only knew smaller yorkies would approach me, ask what breed she was, when I would say a yorkie, they would say she could not be because she was so big, I would tell them yes she is, she is a "standard" yorkie lol, I would then continue to say, there are tea cups, mini's and standards lol. Non yorkie owners, to tell me my baby was NOT a yorkie. Give them the same answer, that will shut them up lol. My other 3 also all past weighed 10 to 13 lbs, they were shorter then my 17 lb girl, all pure loving yorkies. |
Just because a yorkie weighs over a certain amount dosent make them not a yorkie. Honestly what she said was rude and I would email hills and let them know. Mine is 17 pounds and there are members who have them even larger. |
Thank you guys!! Next time I will know for sure what to say to those rude and ignorant people... I tried to discuss this problem on romanian forums aswell but even there people dont understand the weight problem on yorkies. |
It's hardly worth discussing it with ignorant people. I always hear folks say that my 16 pound Yorkie must be mixed. He's not. He just never stopped growing:D |
I've had three rescue yorkie "teapots" and they're all Yoirkie! Enjoy yours, they're lots of fun. |
I would just not listen to people like that:D it has happen to me before as bob weighs 20lbs and people think he is cross with something else I just tell people that I have seen his parents and have the papers for them :) |
My Keno 1s 14 lbs and full yorkie, AKC from show Breeder. Yes it does happen, and guess what it does a lot. Do not waste your time talking with people who do not know what they are talking about. Great looking boy, he looks full yorkie to me. |
I try not to waste my time with these kind of people, but sometimes it is hard. I read so many posts and articles about "teapot" yorkies and I know that original yorkie was pretty big. In my country, breeders sell so called "teacup yorkie" or "toy yorkie" :)) and people just buy it... they are so naive and at the same time so snob. I know for sure that someday someone will get slapped for his/her rude comment about my big boy :D |
You are so right!! Thank you for your answers, guys! I will know for sure what to say to those people next time ;) |
He is beautiful. |
I watched a Yorkie 101 video and it did say if your Yorkie is over 10lbs i think it was, that more than likely it had to be a mix |
But who cares my Yorkie is 4 months and already 5.5lbs so I know she will be on the big size. I love my Prada |
Yeah, a lot of people seem to think that "teacups" are the standard size of this breed. |
He's a beautiful Yorkie. |
My JAX is 11 months and weighs 12 3/4 lbs now. He is tall and long and in no way fat. He is pure YORKIE, his father Shorty is 3 lbs and his momma Jazzy is 4 lbs. I was told that past generations come into play on size sometimes. JAX'S mom Rip :rbyorkie: "Kloee" |
I wonder... those people who say yorkies heavier than 7 lbs are mixed... mixed with what?? Beside weight, my Maxy has a yorkie's silky hair, colors, eyes, paws, teeth, even his head is flat on the top like the AKC says it must be and so on. I am so very curious to find out! |
