What kind of games do you play to wear out your yorkie? What do you do to play with your pup? How do you get that endless energy out for a happy healthy well behaved dog who actually wants to lay down and be groomed at the end of the day? Lilah charm does go on walks but we are rural and the grass is high and the ground is lumpy so I know we are not as regular as I imagine we could be. She likes to play fetch which is very fun for me too. Of course we can rag and wrestle with a toy and she will spend her own time chewing and romping with her favorites but we need more ideas. She follows me around and if course if I go out to the garden then she goes out and waters too etc and all of the normal things but we need new ideas! Freshen us up and share your routines and favorite games/activities please! :) |
if you have a yard, ball throwing is good exercise and she enjoys that , depending on her age and weather condition (to hot or warm) keep her out for longer play time. Yorkies are tireless critters, like the energizer bunny, they keep going & going. Other member will offer up their experience. Good luck |

We use a Chuck-it for fetch... throws it much farther than my arm ever will! lol. He swims in the summer and runs a lot in the yard. In the fall and spring, we do a lot of walking/hiking. Also trick training in the house and interactive toys wear him out mentally. |
My dear friend Jackie bought Katie an iFetch ball launcher. You can set it to go ten, twenty, or thirty feet. Katie needs to get used to the ball, since she usually uses tiny bouncy balls, but I am trying to spike her interest in them. Jackie's Yorkies ran like crazy chasing the balls. The tiny Kong squeaky tennis balls also fit in this. It's really great. Frequently Asked Questions - iFetch Pet Toy - Automatic Ball Launcher |
We do treat hunts , we hide some of their favourite treats all around the garden or in winter the house and then let them loose to. Search for them, they love this game and it's uses their senses as well as has them running around. |
Bubba will chase a ball all day if I throw it. He also loves tug with his wubba and frog. Sissy's favorite activity is rolling over to get her belly scratched. The only thing she will do, activity wise, is work to get treats out of a puzzle toy. But, both get up and run when my husband opens the refrigerator door. We have a large yard and they play out there and a couple of times during the week we go to the dog park. Bubba runs and plays with the other dogs but Sissy stays right by my side. I have to walk the perimeter of the dog park to give her some exercise. |
We play fetch with ours and it really wears them out nicely - they love it so much. I swear, they could play 20 games of it throughout the day and still not be sick of it! |
They like me to throw a ball (we have a ball throwing contraption) for our big dog (border coliie) they then chase and run with him. Sometimes they steal the ball and tease him (Ishmael) he lets them and waits till they give it up. Pippi wiggles her butt and tail while holding the ball and teasing him. She's a flirt. We plan on starting agility in our garden (after vet checks) with them this summer. Indoors- I tie string (never leaving this unattended) to a small tire toy and to a hollow ball toy. This is their favourite game. Throwing the toy across the room, and drag it back, they hunt it, catch it and growl as they kill it and play tug with me. They do this for about 20 minutes then they give up ( so do I). I have to hide these toys, they yelp with excitement when they see these toys. We also have Kong type toys, balls, med kongs, bone shaped ones, we put treats and their food in there that keeps them busy for a short while. We have short training session to break up the day. Just the usual, 'dead', sit, down, up, stand, stay, leave, hello, say please (beg), spin.....etc.. I use the tornado game with them three or four times a week, Caleb likes it the best. Also I use the bone shapes on a board, separately to hide food and ask Caleb to choose which one, he chooses. Now we show him where it's been put and then I move them around, he chooses. We also do with with food in our hands, we hold our closed hands out and tell him to 'choose', then put his paw on the one he chooses, and we open it, if it's the one with a treat in, he gets it. We've not taught Pippi this yet. They bring toys to me, to play fight with. They tease and chase each other with toys and hides. Picking it up and dropping it, near each other then grabbing it and running. The chase begins. They love to chase each other around the garden. Pippi grabs Calebs tail if she catches him. They hunt and chase each other. I take them out to do this several times a day. They ride my mobility scooter to the local field, where they run between my husband and I. Also to the woods. On a good day, when I can walk a little, I take them around our crescent. They have a box of toys that I rotate each week, but they ignore it mostly now, unless a human plays with them. They love ripping up paper and cardboard, which I give them at times. Hiding treats in cardboard boxes for them to work at. |
Working on tricks and doing dog puzzles will mentally stimulate them which helps to tire them out. Me and Callie will also chase each other through the house. I will also get one of her blankets and put it on her and she will wag her tail like crazy rolling around in it and then pop her head out sometimes I will also spread it out and hide a toy under it in the center. She also has a treat stick she will roll all around the house to get the Cheerios to fall out. |
I agree with Juliealfies mum about hiding treats around the house |
The most fun thing I do for my babies: I got an off shore fishing rod from my brother...big rod! I got some fishing line called "spyder wire"....I think is is just nylon but you can reel a 1000 pound shark in with it....I tied the end of that line to a toy....sometimes it is a rubber ring looking thing, sometimes a freesby looking toy, sometimes a stuffed soft toy, and I cast that toy across my yard and reel it back to me! The kiddos go NUTS chasing that toy along the ground! You have to have control of the situation and only allow a couple of dogs play at one time....they get very competitive and will end up fighting over the "chase"....and you have to control how long you allow them to do this....mine would do it until they had run their paws completely off, up to their shoulders, or until they fell over from exhaustion! Mine LOVE this game and it is a favorite play activity around here! Believe me, it will easily run all the piss and vinegar out of my babies and they drop dead into their beds at night after a short workout with the rod and reel! |
My yorkie loves to run! To engage us he'll run into the other room then sit and wait for us to see why he ran. When we find him he runs again. After doing this combined with a good ol' game of tug of war and attack the water bottle in the sock it's a wrap. He's yawning and ready to snuggle by 8:30 then out like a light at 9. |
Well... I'm not sure if the pup is ever really "worn out." We went hiking for five hours the other day (he was off-leash) and he still wanted to keep going. He is good at settling in the house though. I take him around town to run errands which seems to help with his mental stimulation. He likes going to new places. And we've been going hiking regularly lately. In the house, we'll play fetch and work on tricks. |
