getting new puppy I am getting new puppy July 5th, born on Mother's Day. I get to go and have visits to get to know the pup before I bring home. At what age should I ask to start these visits and at what age should I select my puppy? Thanks |
I picked my puppy at 8 weeks then did weekly visits and had pictures. My breeder only lives 30 minutes away from me and we have a very friendly relationship so it was always fun. I'd like to add I had it narrowed down to two pups at 8 weeks and picked a female. I made my final decision at 12 weeks and picked the male I had previously been interested in, completely threw me for a loop lol. |
Congratulations!! My boys' breeder lives 6 hours away, so visiting was not an option. I relied on photos and descriptions of personality from our breeder. Many breeders have waiting lists and require deposits very early. It's a personal decision. For me, I would be nervous choosing too early. I would have a hard time committing before 10 weeks. However, many people here have committed before a litter is even born. You have to really trust your breeder and the breeding stock. As for visits, that is also up to the breeder and you. |

For me, I'd want to be able to wait as long as possible before choosing. Of course you do then run the risk of other people making their choices earlier. I really want to see what the kiddo looks like though. Best of luck! |

My breeder chose for me. There were only two pups in the litter, one is being kept for show and I got the other. Honestly, I didn't mind. I knew I wanted a quality yorkie from a reputable breeder. Health and quality were important to me, not necessarily gender. It just so happens that personality wise, the choice seems perfect for us. |
My puppy was the last of the litter to be picked. I saw him on the website and fell in love. I then drove 2 hours to see him and meet the breeder, see the environment and meet his mommy who by the way was still gorgeous even though she hadn't had her post birth grooming. He was about 6 weeks then but the way he snuggled with me that day I knew he was ours. I could have waited for another litter but he was the one. I wish I could have visited every week but the breeder would send pics and updates about his health, personality and other things until it was time for me to get him. Keep in mind too that the personality they have while with litter mates and mom may not necessarily be the personality they keep after they come home. Cerulean was the laid back one of the litter, quiet and although assertive when need be he would just chill and watch. This little bugger now...let's just say he has my blood pressure rising! He's a little firecracker and I thank God every day for children that can help him get out all of his energy. |
I already put my deposit in and I get second pick of three males. Two of them are small 2.5 and 3 oz at birth. I didn't want the tiniest one, I am thinking middle one. The largest male was 4.5 oz at birth. Don't want to choose yet until I can see their personalities, etc. I will hold off as long as I can. We named him Pips. She is an AKC breeder with one male and three females. They are all raised in their home and she has photos of previous litter pups at various stages. She is sending me photos and a short video today and they are just a week old. |
I am glad ! |
