PROS & CONS on adding pumpkin daily to adult dog’s diet
 
What are the pros & cons to adding a couple of tsp of pumpkin daily to adult dogs diet.(weight 11 lbs) I have researched “adding pumpkin to diet” which has now left me ?. Reaching out to members for their advice / suggestions / experience / reason why they use /used pumpkin.

Didn't your vet just tell you to start a LI food? It's probably not a good idea to add anything until you have figured out a food that works.

Yes she did, I am not adding pumpkin. Reason I ask is, I went into Pet Supplies to buy Natural Brand limited ingredients food, venison, to start the transition. I do not hold stock in what workers at these chain stores tell me. I was being helped by a fellow who told me I should add pumpkin to help the digestive system while in the transition period. (I did not buy the pumpkin) I came home and researched "adding pumpkin to daily diet" all the reading has now left me with ?. The transition is almost at it's end. I was thinking for future feedings, what the benefit would be. A while ago I read comments on adding pumpkin to diet, after what I read leaves me with? Reason I am reaching out. Thank you for your reply.

I have added pumpkin in the past for various reasons which included adding weight to a foster pup, adding fiber for anal gland issues, upset tummies and even to hide a medication. So I guess my answer would be, it depends on the reason to determine the benefit of using it.

Most of the time dogs can tolerate added fiber like pumpkin in their diets but I would proceed very cautiously and see if he can tolerate it before going nuts with that.

IF, and that is a BIG IF, I were to use it, it would be only a tsp or 2, but I would consult my vet first. I had seen many, many members advising adding pumpkin to daily food diet, that is why I asked. Thank you for your advise.

You also could add sweet potato mashed or peas or any other source of fiber he might like. Mine really like butternut squash and you can usually find it frozen. I'm sure your vet would be fine with it. If you have any worries, you can ask the vet nutritionist at petdiets or check the aspca list for safety.

If you trastistion the food correctly you should not need the pumpkin. I do use pumpkin for constipation

It would only complicate a food transition.

I have found that small amounts of pumpkin make my girl's poop very soft, so it it only utilized for constipation here.

Honestly, a healthy dog eating a quality food should not need fiber added.

I have had many dogs in my life, have changed dog foods many times, I usually spread it out over a period of 10 to 14 days to make it easier on their digestive system. Never had a problem, today many new things are being used. Until joining YT, I never heard of feeding pumpkin or sweet potato to dogs. I researched the pumpkin, some said used for constipation, that would mean soft stool, in transitioning you are looking for firm stool, I will not use it, but this guy at Pet Supply said it helped with the digestive system. Only for future use is the reason I was asking. Once Cody's food is stabilized, I wanted to know what the benefits of pumpkin is for, because I saw members advising to add pumpkin to their dogs daily diet...Thank you for your reply

If you have a dog with a very sensitive stomach that changing there food even slowly seems to effect then I would think it would help during the change over. I have read a lot about giving it when the dog is constipated or has runny poo. My dog will not touch it I even tried putting it on my finger (ewwww) and trying to get her to lick it off but she was very much not a fan.

I tried giving Bella some pumpkin when she was constipated following her spay. She turned her nose up at it--wouldn't even touch it--and she got regular on her own.

First time I am changing his food, Cody is adopted, I only have him 6 mos and he is 3 y/o, the transition is almost completed and so far so good. I really cannot say if he has a sensitive stomach, time with him will tell. Thank you very much for your input.

I don't think Cody would turn up his nose at anything lol,
Whoops, just remembered, he did turn down pop corn, all my pups LOVED pop corn, he is the first to have turned it down.Thanks for your reply

I think it just depends on the dog. I've always switched btwn foods for my dogs w/ no transition and they've never had a single issue. For other dogs, it may help to have some fiber support during transition.

As far as using pumpkin as a daily fiber supplement - nothing wrong with this, just as nothing wrong w/ humans doing it...just depends on whether there is a need for it. If I wanted my dog to have daily fiber, I wouldn't use pumpkin, I'd use Benefiber.

I've read that dogs that have digestive issues when transitioning food can be given chicken & rice (something bland) for a couple of days to help make the transition smoother.

Pumpkin is a great source of fiber, helps firm things up when needed but can have the opposite effects when given too much.
