Yorkie To Small? 3 Attachment(s) Hi, I'm about to go pick up my yorkie puppy Toby who is 10 weeks. When he was taken to the vet 3 days ago for his check up they said that he only weighs 14oz and will be between 3-3.5 pounds when full grown. His dad is 2 pounds and the mom is 4 pounds. Is it ok for him to weigh that little at this age or is it bad? |
He is MUCH too small to leave his momma. If you take him now there's a good chance he won't live to see his first birthday! |
Puppies should stay with there mom until 12 weeks but very tiny ones should stay even longer. A reputable breeder should know. A reputable breeder should also know better then to breed females under 5 pounds. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Toby is adorable! It would be in his and your best interest if Toby could stay with the breeder until he is a little bigger. Puppies under 2 pounds require around the clock care. If you are not home during the day, I strongly urge you not to bring him home yet. |
Hey he is a cutie. My pebbles weighed 10 ounces at 8 weeks and bam bam my other baby weighed 1 pound 10 ounces at same age. At 6 1/2 months old they are doing great! They haven't been weighed since 6 months old but at 6 months pebbles was 1.9 and bam bam 4.4. They wouldn't spay pebbles but bam bam is due to be neutered in 2 weeks. They are well socialized and doing great with potty training. |
He really should stay with the breeder until he is 2lbs. Hypoglycemia is something you don't want to have to deal with on your own and it is very common in pups that are so small. Make sure you have a lot of time to devote to him around the clock. He is adorable and you want him to have the best start possible. |
Hi and WELCOME to YT :)! I would ask if he could stay w/ the breeder until 12 weeks, let him gain a little more. |
I think you'll be fine as long as you're home during the day. Just make sure you get a tube of Nutrical. :) Good luck with your pup! |
Congrats. Definitely pick up Nurtical before you pick him up. Also make sure you leave out food all day for him. Are you home during the day? You can ask the breeder to keep your pup for a few more weeks. |
Thanks everyone. I'm in the army so I'm not home most of the time but my wife is pretty much 24/7. We already have a yorkie/shih tzu(Emma). She was give to us when she was just 6 weeks. We took care of her all the time to made sure she was healthy. Now she will be 8 months in 2 days and in perfectly healthy =) |

Honey was the same size when I got her and she is now 3.8 pounds. She is very healthy now and didn't do to bad. I did have a Hypoglycemia problem once but the vet and the breeder told me to just give her syrup on a soon and it worked really good. A lot of people prefer to use Nutrical but I never used it. I think you will be fine as long as you or someone else is able to watch your dog when you are not able to. To my understanding Hypoglycemia can happen to all toy breeds and it normally comes from the stress of being in a new home. I think you will be fine bringing you new baby home. |
