"The Honest Kitchen" .. good food? I came across this brand and it looks great because it's human grade and freeze dried.. but can this be used alone to provide all necessary vitamins and nutrients? Anyone else use this brand? It looks like a good alternative to home cooking but I'm not sure about it yet. |
I believe almost all of the formulas are complete with exception of the "Preference" formula that you're supposed to add your own protein source to. We have attempted to use this brand in the past and have tried a few of the samples. It made Toki use the bathroom a lot and the food pretty much came out of her looking the same way as it did going in! It's seems so plant heavy as well...ended up being not for us. It might be a good option for dogs needing limited ingredients or that have certain food sensitivities perhaps. Toki did seem to enjoy the taste although some dogs may have issues with the like the porridge consistency or odor I imagine. Hopefully others can share their experiences here...I think Jenny (mimimomo) fed this in the past with good results though and has more experience feeding it over the long term. The Honest Kitchen makes pretty good treats though...we recently have been using the Pecks which are 0.6 calories a treat and sometimes we'll get a package of their Beams (rolled fish skin chews) which the pups love! |

I tried it for Galen and he was not a fan. He is a finicky pup. . . He loves Primal and Stella and Chewy better . . I like their process better. They freeze dry their food. And it is not powdery and not herb smelling |

Home cooking is not all that hard for an adult dog that is healthy you can go to balance it buy there supplement and use one of there recipes and you can cook a week or two in advance. With a puppy or a dog with health issues you need to get a consult from a vet nutritionist but I still don't think it's very hard. I have never cooked before and I did it for my yorkie and it was pretty easy she just did not take to it. She is picky and did not like honest kitchen but I do use there goat milk which has regulated her poo and taken away her gas. I used to be crazy about all the holistic dog foods and stuff but most don't do feeding trails have vets on staff. I decided to try Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier because they are a very trustworthy company. Callie who is very picky and has sensitive skin loves it and has done amazing on it. They have a puppy formula. |
I wouldn't touch it. There's no legal definition for "human grade" in dog food. Beware of slick marketing. |
I know there are many YT members that love the Honest Kitchen brand. It is quality stuff. Gracie didn't care for the sample we gave her so I decided just to move on to something else. HK has several formulations. Did you go to their website to read about the product? It is true that there is not an official definition that pertains to "human grade" ingredients. I think some companies use the term when describing ingredients that they buy from human food distributors but with pet food you can never be sure. You might want to email the company with you questions and make sure they answer them to your satisfaction. |
I fed Honest Kitchen but I couldn't stand the smell so after finishing the box I didn't buy anymore. The dogs like it. |
THK is the only pet food made in a human food facility...people that work there taste test the food, it is human grade. My guys loved it @ 1st, I fed it for over a year but after awhile, they got bored w/it. The texture & smell is not for everyone & their dogs. Need to play around w/the amount of water to get it to the texture that they like. It is plant based, so it is green in color & their poopie will be also. My 2 got struvite crystals while they were eating this food, so I have no idea if it had anything to do w/THK or if they were not drinking enough water. It went away after a couple of months, by then we switched to another food. THK was very helpful & responsive when I emailed, they have excellent customer service & they provided the pH of the food when the other company didn't even reply. They offer sample packs, so it makes it easy to try out the food 1st. It doesn't hurt to try! Honest Kitchen Sample Bundles for Dogs, Puppies and Cats | The Honest Kitchen If you have a store that carries THK, they also usu have 1oz samples. |
I feel like it's overrated. Plus Jackson would not touch it. It's like green, and parsley smelling..... LOL... I am shocked that dogs actually eat it to be honest! I'd rather just homecook than waste my $$$ on THK. |
