Necessary Vaccines? Hi Everyone, I hope you are all doing well and your little babies are healthy and well too. I wanted opinions on what vaccines should be given every year and which ones can be skipped. My Yorkie is 5 lbs and her feet never touch grass. She is trained to go on wee wee pads and never goes outside. She does not come into contact with other dogs. She is older and very delicate. I am hesitant to give her another rabies vaccine since I know she does NOT have rabies and has not been in contact with a dog that has rabies. Vets sometimes tell you what is protocol and I feel you need to be proactive in making the right decisions for your Yorkie, since Yorkies are very delicate... especially the older and smaller ones. Please tell me what you feel is absolutely necessary? Thanks. |
Your state is what sets the law for rabies like here in md it is the law that every dog has to get rabies every three years. Rabies does not just come from other dogs mostly it comes from wild animals like raccoons. Dap is not something that should be done every year at the most every three years but every five years is ok. After 6 I wouldn't do dap anymore and unless you have to kennel her I would not do any of the non core vaccines like Lyme, bordatella, and Lepto. So really I would just follow your laws about rabies. |
Thanks - What about DHPP? Thanks so much for your reply. What about DHPP? Is that the same as Dap? thanks again |
Your vet can give her a blood test to check her immunity levels for the DHPP and rabies and if your pets immunity levels come up high enough she can be exempted from the rabies requirement. I stopped giving my pets vaccinea after a 8 years of a modified vaccine schedule. They see a holistic vet that incorporates both traditional veterinarian medicine and holistic practice. If you want I can scan his vaccine schedule and give you a copy to review. Just keep in mind he is not saying NOT to vaccinate your pet but after a certain period of time only do it if the tests show they need it. |

I vaccinate all my dogs for rabies every 3 years. They were 12 when they had their last rabies and will get it again at 15 if they live that long. I stopped doing DHPP on them as they got older. My young dogs have it every 3 years, but I will likely stop at age 7 for them. |
Here is a link to the Rabies law in the state of New York. http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/co...fact_sheet.pdf I vaccinate mine every 3 years for rabies. Doodlebug is does not get the DPHH after having a reaction while getting his puppy vaccines. The law that I linked for NY mentions nothing about titers for proof of rabies. |
Heres more information about states that offer rabies exemption. NY is listed although they will give you a hard time. States with Medical Exemptions in Lieu of Rabies Vaccination - Rabies Challenge Fund |
Yes that is correct. The titer is for the other vaccines. I know this is going to stir the pot up but heres some info about rabies. Not saying I totally agree but its something to think about unless you live in an area where rabies is rampant. https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.co...s-vaccination/ |

Distemper and Parvo every 3-5 years; after age 6-7, I won't be giving it any more. Rabies is per your state laws. All other vaccines are elective / non-core vaccines. |

Obviously rabies is a necessity in areas prone to rabid wildlife. That would be complete neglect. The map you posted indicates most incidents of rabies in rural/suburb areas. But research is out there that suggests perhaps in aome areas it's not as necessary. Just saying. I plan on vaccinating my pet in a modified schedule. Just dont believe in over vaccinating. I also like to be informed of ALL sides of the coins as I like thought provoking information. |
