Bowl intimidation??? Are our babies intimidated by bowl size???? I have 2 sets of bowls that I use for charlie and it seems he only like to dine or drink from the smaller bowls now I have used them for years but am just now noticing that he does this. Can BIG bowls bother our babies????? and if so why? |
Huey has little porcelain bowls in a metal stand for his food and water, but when we go to my parents, he goes straight for the big stainless steel bowl on the stand that he can barely reach over the edge to drink from that belongs to parents Cavaliers. No bowl intimidation here. |
I used small ceramic bowls for food. They are all less that a 1/2 C in size. Since they only eat 1/4 C at each feeding anything larger is just too big. I had a few stainless bowls but Doodlebugs tag would hit the side of the bowl and he'd freak out. As for their water bowls I use a little larger 3 C ceramic bowl and change out the water at least 2X daily to keep it fresh. |
Intimidated by bowls -- yes! Not only size, but material. I use small glass custard bowls for water. For food, I use small ceramic salad plates from our old dinnerware set. Max was always skittish around the stainless steel bowls. He prefers the small, flat plates. |
:D Harry HATES stainless steel bowls....I think he sees the 'monster at the bottom' and just won't eat from them.... ...neither will he drink from one :D He has to eat from a plate, 'his plate', very flat and cream in colour to show off his food to it's best advantage....oh, and his drinking bowl matches, too.... :D |
Yes, a lot of small dogs dislike big bowls. Why? Who knows - sometimes you can figure them out and sometimes you can't. I know my Tibbe hated that his ID tag would clang into his stainless steel bowl and until he got used to it, he acted scared of it. My Jilly started out afraid of all bowls for a long time! |
my papillon does not like stainless steel bowls......she will eat out of them if she has to but prefers ceramic (a little) and plastic (her favorite) |
Buster would not eat out of any bowl at first only small plates. It took him a long time to get used to the low stainless steel dish for his food. I had him using a ceramic bowl for his water but I noticed the design on the bowl was wearing off so I was worried it might be leaching into his water. I tried to switch him to stainless steel water bowls. Nope he would not use them at all. I am thinking about glass/pyrex water bowls. |
Hmmmm well I guess I am going to have to replace the 2 big bowls with smaller ones, (silly Charlie Brown ) maybe i will hang on to them for when the grand dog comes to visit, he will eat off of tree bark just so lang as there is food there for him :D LOL. |
When he eats out of a big bowl, his entire head has to reach inside. He can't see what is going on beside him or behind him. It could be a scary situation. He would rather not eat his meal than feel vulnerable. |
My two don't seem to mind... They will eat out of anything :p |

He is also afraid of the dishes jumping out at him. The boys eat in the narrow passage between the kitchen peninsula and a wall. One boy on each side. Once Max is done, he tiptoes around the dishes giving them wide berth.:D |
Gracie doesn't like bowls with deep sides. She usually eats out of a soup bowl with low sides or a flat plate. I guess she doesn't like to get her furry face into what is in the bowl:confused: Not sure. She was a picky eater as a pup and I have gone through hoops when she was younger finding all the best ways for her to eat. Glass bowls are defiantly a must for her. |
Pebbles has a hearty appetite and will eat from any kind of bowl/plate. It doesn't matter to her what shape or size the dish is, or what it's made from, she just cares about the food in the dish lol! She's a little piggy, she'll eat any kind of food offered to her. |
Ok this doesnt involve a bowl but had to share. We had a bag of Life savers gummies on the kitchen table when we werent looking Charlie got up on the table via the couch and started eating the gummies, I just looked at him and said "What are you doing????" he just kept on eating Geesh had to pull him off the table and now have to keep the gummies way up high. |
