Still want potty outside My Gunner is 6 months old now and want go outside to potty. He uses my hard wood floor to go. Can I still train him to go on puppy pads even though he is getting older? What to do advice please !!!! |
Yes, my Teddy was strictly outdoor trained to about 8 months. I re-trained him to use pads. It's like starting with a new puppy. Limit Gunner's freedom to a smallish area (small room or xpen with the pad). Put him on the pad and use keywords and phrases to tell him to "potty here." When he does it right, praise him and reward him. When he has the hang of it, give him more freedom. Teddy took to peeing right away on the pad, but pooping was more difficult. I had to corral him and really encourage him to do it. Praise and rewards are key. Here is the blog I wrote on potty training: Potty Training Small Dogs - Dog Life and Style |
Has he been neutered? Scooter sent on my floors, tables, bedspreads hanging down, etc. until he was neutered. Since I'm gone a lot I set up on place in the house with potty pads and he goes there. I got the kind with the "scent" on them and it must have helped. Now I just buy adult people pads that they use on beds because they are a heck of a lot cheaper than the pee pads for dogs. Good luck and be patient. |
It seems strange and I got funny looks from neighbors but it worked. I potty pad trained a puppy because it wouldn't go outside. Then once the potty pads worked I started moving the potty pads closer to the door and then out the door to the porch then in the yard and eventually to the area where she was to be going. It worked but my dh thought I was nuts taking a potty pad outside. |
