Yorkie and Cats Hi everyone! I'm getting my first Yorkie today from a friend who can't keep her anymore. I have 2 cats (3 years old) they are quite friendly. The dog is 5 years old. Do you think there will be any problem? Any advice on introducing them? Thank you :) |
Do you know if the dog has ever lived with a cat? Have your cats ever been arounda dog? It may take an adjustment period, but should work out. Jackson is okay with cats.... so long as they don't run, LOL. He's so weird. He'd never hurt a cat. But he's VERY interested in them; a little too interested most of the time. Like, we can't just go into someones house who has a cat and just let him loose because if he sees that cat, and then cat runs, he chases it and becomes obsessive about finding it. If a cat is under a bed or hidden, he will bark until corrected. But my dad has two cats and he can be chilling upstairs and not really care that much about them. We have a gate at the top of the stairs and dogs mainly stay down and cats up. However my bedroom is upstairs so often he will be up there and not really seemingly caring about the cats- unless the other dogs begin barking at them, then he suddenly will too. If it's a cat that shows equal interested in him, and will allow Jackson to sniff it, etc, he's fine. But yeah it's the running thing that causes his chase instinct to come out. Most cats aren't pleased to see an unknown dog and will hiss, etc, which just makes Jackson more interested in chasing them down. |
The dog has never lived with cats before. My cats has been around dogs but they just stayed out of each other's ways. I was planning on keeping the dog in one room to start with and let the cats come and take a sniff through the screen door. To see the reaction. |
I've always had good luck with cats and dogs together. They always have become good friends, every time. |
Check this video out.. This is Charlie when he was in his doggy teens and my cat at the time in our back yard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI5ad7dVbx0 |
There are lots of members here who have both dogs and cats who peacefully coexist or are pals. I think you have a good plan to let them sniff each other out through the screen door and see how they react. We do not have a cat in the house, but we have a neighborhood cat who thinks he is a dog. I tried introducing Max, who didn't like that the cat stared directly into his eyes. Cats stare, dogs think staring is rude and aggressive. Max jumped around trying to act menacing and the cat was completely unimpressed. :p |
The video is so cute! I hope they are like that. Let's see how it goes. Thanks everyone! |
I'm not sure why but my first yorkie, Charlie, hated cats. We could not have him anywhere near them. We could even say the word cat and he would go ballistic. We had to spell it to keep him from melting down. Barney, also a male yorkie, doesn't even notice them. Now, horses......he thinks he should rule those, but he has no problem with cats. Good luck with your new addition and welcome to YT! |
One thing make sure you keep the cat litter box out of reach of the dog. All my dogs thought kitty litter was delicious. My Yorkie incessantly chased my Maine Coone, usually when Karma was running to or from something, but they also were able to lay in my lap together as well. |
Are you getting the pup through a shelter ? I have 4 cats. I would bring your pup in a carrier. Let the cats sniff the pup through the carrier. Also make sure the cats have places to jump up on. They need safe places to go without the dog. |
She's a 5 year old yorkie. My friend couldn't keep her because of some problem with the building she's living in. So I'm kinda looking after the yorkie for her for I don't know how long. Jeanie (The Yorkie) is barking at my cats, scaring them away. I'm keeping her in a separate room with a screen door. The cats can check out the dog from afar but when the dog sees the cats she barks.... What should I do next? |

we have two yorkies and to cats. both yorkies came after their were two cats in the house. it all worked out fine each time. make sure the cats have a place to get to out of the yorkie reach. also since your yorkie is older I think it will be fine. |

We don't have Tiger (the cat) anymore... I wish we did. He was a great cat.. Sorry.. I'm not trying to hi-jack the OP's thread. LOL I just wanted to show her that cats and dogs can get along. Actually, I've always had great luck with cats and dogs getting along so far. |
I recommend getting a 'Cat tree' for the kitties, it will allow them a high place to retreat to, to get up and away from the dog. It may take time for them to adjust to each other. |
