Best Online DNA Kit. Ideas?
 
As many of you might know. I bought two dogs that were said to be pure-bread yorkies with no papers. I am a new yorkie owner so I was out to believe whatever. I gave the girl many chances to tell me if they were mixed but she said that they weren't. I saw the mom and dad and they were definitely yorkies. However, I have decided to get a DNA test just for my own sake. I need to know for myself what personalities I am going to be dealing with in the future. I have checked around where I live, and there is no place that does DNA testing for animals. I am looking online, but there is soooo much out there! Does anyone know of any legit DNA kits? Ones that will work? That I can purchase online tonight? Has anyone tried and have they worked well? Serious Inquiries only :) thanks in advance

Honestly, most of the DNA kits I've seen are total crapshoots. Some people that have purebred dogs have sent one in just for fun and purebred Great Danes have come back with like Husky's mixed in them. And it simply was not possible.

The only reliable way I know of is IF you do a blood test at the vet, and I am pretty positive you need DNA from both parents as well as your pups, which is probably not possible in your case..

I've often wondered myself, as I think my Jackson is a Silky sometimes but it's not really worth paying big $$$ for anyway. He's my boy and I love every insane ounce of him. I got him from a 'backyard breeder' as well, I saw the mother who looked Yorkie to me. Odds are he's just a badly bred Yorkie really, but he's got the Silky temperament and looks. The breeds are so closely related.

A DNA test can still not be 100% right. Have you asked your vet about DNA testing?

yes lol. i said that above there's no where around me that does it... i mean no where... which is why i'm asking for the best dna test.......................... don't care if it's not completely totally 100 percent accurate... most DNA tests arent even sure to be 100 percent accurate. don't really care. it's all i got. and i wanna do it.

awesome.. thanks so much for your input. im gonna keep trying to contact places AROUND me hopefully i will find SOMEONE, but i had nooo luck today!!! grrr!

THIS IS MORE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE DNA TESTS OR PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD EXPERIENCES WITH DOG DNA TESTS. not for people who have heard things about them. i was RECOMMENDED to do them from YT and would like to know if you have DONE THEM, which one did you do, did it work? :)

If you know they are definitely Yorkies, why are you going through the trouble of a DNA test? Because... you clearly *don't* know if they're 100% Yorkie, right? Which, is really no big deal. I totally understand the "just wanting to know" factor. If there was anything reliable out there, I'd do it, simply because I'm curious to know for sure if Jackson is a Silky or a Yorkie.

The fact of the matter is though you could get a DNA test and it could come back that they're Border Collies. Or it very well may say they're purebred Yorkies. Who knows. That's the problem with the current DNA tests. I would say 'Wisdom' panels have dominated the market and is the 'best'.

I did have friends who did them. None came back with plausible results.

snarky? oh hun, i wasn't be snarky. just simply stating what I was going to do ;)

and who cares if it comes back wrong. I have the money, I wanna take a chance and I wanna do it. lol. it's worth a shot. it's all i got. and no matter how much i love my little babies, i deserve to know what breed my dog is. it's my choice.

and wisdom panel is the one i've heard about as well being pretty good. i'm leaning more towards that one.

I deleted the snarky line because I didn't feel like getting into an argument but I guess you saw it before I deleted it.

Then why are you asking our opinions? Go for it! :) Have fun. It CAN be interesting and funny for sure. A bunch of folks did it on another forum I'm on just for fun to see what their dogs came back as as. We all got a chuckle at the results.

I get the feeling that you don't really like being told what to do. So just buy one and let us know what the results are. They often sell them cheap on groupon's, etc, so be sure to check those out.

You could also do a search on these forums and see if anyone else had good results with them. Or read Amazon reviews.

yeah i saw it before you deleted it. and i haven't seen anyone tell me what to do on this forum. lol

yeah who knows, it might come out all jacked up or it might come out all correct. ill deff be sure to let everyone know. it's a mystery that's for sure!

Wow, they're freakin' adorable. More than likely not Yorkies though. Look more like 'Morkies' or maybe even YorkiePoo.

While Yorkies can all look different (due to either bad breeding or simply an 'off' pup) they all tend to have a fairly distinct 'look' as a puppy and your pups (in the nicest way possible, they're SERIOUSLY adorable) don't really have that purebred Yorkie look.

YEESS. those are the 2 breeds people have said they looked like. morkies and yorkiepoos. which are all adorable!

I believe only one of those questions asked if anyone had tried it. So naturally, other people are going to comment, as that's the beauty of a public forum. I believe I attempted to answer 3 out of 4 of those.

and you are absolutely correct. they don't have the purebread look at all...!!!!!
