May Day was one of my favourite days at school as a child. I loved dancing around the May Pole! Do they still do that at your local primary schools?
 | :) Yes, but usually in the 'countryside' schools.... Quote: |

What in the world was that big black thing dancing around supposed to be? It looked like a big black satellite dish with an antenna sticking out but am sure it meant renewal or new start or something. I absolutely love to see those big huge figures at celebrations cavorting around in parades!!!
 | :D Hee hee!!! Weird, isn't it?!!!?
It's a very old, pagan tradition dating back hundreds of years. Everybody in the town is either on the side of the 'Red 'Oss' or the 'Blue 'Oss' - you can't choose, it depends on the one your particular family has always supported.
Everything starts at dawn, and carries on 'til late into the night. The whole town is bedecked with greenery and spring flowers, and there's a huge Maypole in the centre. There's a constant song which becomes quite mesmerising...the place is totally jam-packed, as people come from all over the world to witness it.
The huge black whirling thing (the 'Oss) - well, if you are caught by it, and it gets you underneath it's skirt....let's just say it's a fertility thing  :D |
