Need help with serious coat issues. This is my first attempt at a thread so please excuse me if I am doing the wrong thing... I have a Yorkie, 8 mo old, female...Jetta. Jetta pulls the hair out of her hind quarters over the back and down the legs. She doesn't pull all the hair but it is all about 1/8" long where she pulls the hair. Her coat is sparce but soft and doesn't grow like the others. Someone mentioned a break-away coat? Jetta has been checked for mites and mange with skin scraping. There is also no broken skin or sores or anything like that going on. The hair basically seems to stop growing or break off before reaching her knees. It is super fine and the longer hair is very sparse. We have switched to organic anti-itch shampoo and conditioner. Basically she doesn't have enough hair, and it is very slow growing and doesn't seem to get longer than her knee. We have switched to raw diet and put her on goats milk and probiotics and are hoping this will help but wanted info from folks that know Yorkies. . |
Sounds like Jetta could be suffering allergies of some sort or yeast. Are all of her basic blood tests normal? Sometimes skin and coat problems can be secondary to a health problem. Allergies are usually environmental, although diet changes can help. Have you taken her to a dermatologist? The derm specialist is often able to figure out problems that a regular vet cannot. Here is a thread that may be of some help -- Wylie's Mom is a great resource for derm issues (ignore that Fleas are in the title): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ease-help.html |
In addition to pulling the hair off of her back legs - does she also chew or lick any of her paws? Bc that would be another cardinal sign of allergies. Humans cough/sneeze with allergies...dogs have their paws itch and it drives them to bite and lick them to make the sensation go away. Things to ask yourself...how long has she been doing this and when did it start? Is it seasonal or year round? Is she itchy? Do her eyes water a lot? If you do suspect allergies, do read this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |
Thank you! Jetta just started her new diet one month. We are seeing a difference in her coat. She also just is finishing her first heat cycle. We can get a blood workup for her when she gets spayed. Thank you for the threads and ideas, allergies are something we have been looking at for an answer. :) |
