yorkie alone for 7 hours tomorrow? Hi there. Tomorrow I will be gone from my home for 7 hours. My yorkie is 7 weeks old and we just got them Friday night. Should I put them in their kennels all day or should I put them in their doggy play pin (which is the size of an apartment kitchen) with their food, water, toys and puppy pads? I'm not sure which to do as this will be the only time I'll be gone that long at one time. I just don't want to put them into their kennels and then they get super stressed because they're so young and they've only been at my home for a few days. I just want to do what's best. |
I'd find a sitter or board them at my vet's for the day, or find a relative or neighbor that can keep them for the day. They're a bit young to be left alone for that amount of time. |
I agree with not leaving them alone. Darla is 7 weeks old (she'll be 8 weeks on thursday) and I wouldn't leave her alone at this young age. A pet sitter is a great idea or as was also suggested (and even better IMO) a friend or relative who's willing to come over would be the ideal situation. You can't crate them for that long because their bladders are still so small so it would be a little cruel to crate them that long with no bathroom breaks. On the other hand you can't leave them out because puppies that age can get places and into things we would have never thought possible. Inevitably I think opting for a sitter of some sort will be your best bet. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Good luck with whatever decision you make. :) |
I took her over to what is now her babysitter!!! :) |
That is way to long for those pups they should still be with there mom until 12 weeks. If they have a hypoglycemic episode while you are gone from not eating every few hours then they could be dead by the time you get back. |
Um. First off the vet is the one who okayed it gave them their shots. They eat JUST fine fyi and a lot for that matter. Like I said I'm a new yorkie owner. When a vet okays the puppy coming home I'm going to listen to them. Thanks though. And if you didn't see what I said before you posted that I said they have a sitter for the day. So please read before assuming things. |

I as the owner am a NEW owner. As I've stated. I'm gonna listen to my vet. And I don't even take them outside because of the parvo issue. I'm not completely stupid at this and PSTINARD thanks so much :) |

Very good! |
hey Kimmi. Try not to let what some people say on here get to you. I believe they have good intentions, but sometimes come across a little condescending without even knowing it. :) Just being here asking questions show you are a good mommy! |

Taylor has been around here long enough to see far too many takes of puppies left alone and suffering from hypoglycemia as well as other issues brought about by puppies going to their new homes at a much too early age. I'm glad the OP found a pet sitter. However, I am floored that ANY vet would approve vaccinations at such an early age. At 7/8 weeks, the puppy still using antibodies provided by the mother dog. Many studies have shown that vaccines that early are pretty worthless and recommend not starting vaccines until between 9-12weeks. Vaccines then take 2-3 weeks to fully trigger an effective immune response. There are other reasons that reputable breeders won't release pups to their new owners before they are 12 weeks old. The OP states that the people who will be watching the pup pups?) are "yorkie experts", so hopefully they truly are well versed in the needs of such a young pup. |
