How do you know the correct amount to feed
 
Sophie is 7 months old and I have posted several times about her not eating issues after she had been treated for a parasite for about 6 weeks. Well I started her on a teaspoon of Activia once a day and boy has her appetite picked up. She is finally gaining weight. I need to know what is the correct amount to feed her as I don't want her to become overweight? I feed her twice a day about 1/5 a cup of dry with a couple of tablespoons of wet dog food. After she eats she goes around looking for more.

How much to feed depends upon a lot of things. The kibble bag should give guidelines on daily feeding amounts, but you have to factor in her metabolism, how active she is, and whether she needs to gain weight, lose weight, or maintain weight.

Looking down at Sophie from above you should be able to see a waist. Feeling her sides, you should be able to feel the outline of her ribs, but they should not be prominent or so padded as to be untouchable. If she has been sick and hungry, I would give her a bit more than usual until she has completely recovered.

I feed the dog according to the instructions on the bag or can unless the vet tells me differently. Tibbe usually acts still hungry after he's eaten but I suppose it's just like people - his brain doesn't yet know his tummy has all the food recommended according to the the ingredients and calories in his food and his size. After some time passes, he seems to forget about it and busy himself with other things. And this boy is sturdy - not the least bit on the skinny side so he's getting more than enough food despite the fact that he usually acts still hungry after mealtime.

I measure it out in their little containers in the am. If I don't Spud will scarf up all of JoJo's food . He loves to eat. He can be lookin like a blimp if I do not watch him.

I have always free fed mine their kibble and have never had one be over weight.

You can use the food bag as a guideline. I feed wellness and it says to feed 1/2 cup a day at 7 months and then 1/4 at 12 months. I fed her blue buffalo before this though and the guideline said 1/4 cup so I just kept it at 1/4 cup as well with the blue buffalo because I also give her fruits or vegetables for breakfast and sometimes some chicken or salmon for dinner. 1/5 cup twice a day seems like a lot to me but it really depends on what the guideline for the food is because if that's what it says then that is perfectly fine. I free feed Chloe so the 1/4 cup lasts her all day. Sometimes I will add a little bit extra if she eats it all.

Chattiesmom is right as well about feeding her a little more than usual for now if she has been sick but then gradually putting her on a regular feeding schedule.

Thanks everyone for your response but my problem is she will not eat her kibble dry so I add a little wet food to her kibble. My normal routine is to cut back a little on the amount of recommended kibble and then add a couple tablespoons of canned food. I think I will just keep a close eye on her weight. Thanks again!

Did you ask your vet how her weight is? She is a puppy and still growing. Do you give her a lot of treats during the day?

I do give her treats when she does potty outside or on the potty pad. I have not been back to the vet since he released her after she was treated for parasites. After she was treated it was almost impossible to get her to eat on a regular basis. When I added the wet food she finally started to eat. I know people have told me when she is hungry she will eat but you have not met Sophie... There was a period of time she would not eat but a bite or two of food for several days. She seems to be doing well right now no diarrhea or throwing up. I do have to talk with the vet to discuss changing her flea preventive treatment so I will talk with him about this also.

A teaspoon or two of canned food shouldn't have a huge calorie impact on her total daily calorie intake.

You're doing it correctly...by subtracting a bit of kibble for the wet you're adding. Do this for a while and increase it as she continues to grow. At some point, you'll get a gut for the amount, and you'll feed according to 'body condition'.

I'm attaching a chart for you so you can see what body condition really means. :)

Thanks for the chart. Last time I spoke with the vet he said she was the perfect weight but that was before she got sick and stopped eating like she should. I did check her this morning and saw a small indent at her waist and I can feel her ribs but not very much. I gave her a bath yesterday and after seeing her wet I don't think she is overweight at the moment. I just want to keep it that way. I cannot believe how much Sophie looked so much like your puppy before we took her to the groomer and she was a little bit younger. She has the little platinum head that is so cute.
