Tips on keeping leg and chest hair untangled? I just detangled Chloe's leg and chest hair.. but she rolled around the floor and she's tangled again, lol. Her hair on top of her body doesn't tangle at all, it's her legs and chest that tangle A LOT. I like the look of long hair and I know many yorkies on yorkie talk have beautiful long hair so I just wanted to know... how do you keep their hair tangle-free? |
I'm planning on trying this for Darla. She's a puppy now so her hair isn't very long yet but I comb her coat once a day to get her used to grooming. I focus most on the pubic and fluffy bottom, as well as the arm pits and the chest. When I had my three Shih Tzu I noticed that those mentioned areas always knotted up the worst. Another lady on here recommended the Wampum line of show care products. It has lots of oils and different sorts of styling products for dogs with longer show coats. Here's a link for a site that sales Wampum products if you want to take a look. It looks like good stuff to me. Have you cut her arm pit hair really short or had it shaved? That helps a lot. You could also cut the chest hair with thinning shears, it may help without losing too much length. When you're combing pick up her front paw and really get all around and under it. I wasn't brushing that area well enough when I started. |

Yeah, I think it's my fault because when I brought her home I didn't really think her legs need THAT much brushing so it ended up tangling up. Now when I detangle it the hair still isn't as smooth and soft as the top of her body.. I'm assuming because the tangling has damaged it and that's why it tangles so easy. I really don't want to shave it off though :( |
I have found that coconut oil helps keep my long coated ones from re-tangling. It will look oily for a day or so but then it soaks into the coat. At least this is what happens on an older dog's coat. A puppy coat may react differently. |
My Dolly has had beautiful floor length hair forever. Since she's not a show dog I've taken some liberties & found some places where I see no reason to have the long hair: 1)I cut all the chest hair very short 2)I trim a lot of hair in the butt area (if poop gets caught on the hair I figure that hair doesn't belong there!) 3)the topknot hair is cut short which keeps the topknot lighter & much easier to keep in place. 4.)Sometimes I'll layer some of the hair just below the back (top) of her neck where her harness hits. I've noticed she has so much hair in that area it's nice to have a little less hair for the harness to mess up. This isn't noticeable at all. The only slightly tricky one is #4, all the others are very easy to do. Good luck! |
I put extra conditioner on the chest and legs and try to let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing. The boys are not immersed in water during their baths. I massage their shoulders to keep them occupied. After the bath and blow dry, I make sure to comb all of the hair to eliminate every tiny little tangle. I work down to using the very fine teeth of the comb. If any small tangles are left, they will lead to large tangles. I've tried trimming/shaving armpits a little, but I found this made things worse on my boys. We check arm/leg areas daily to make sure little tangles are not forming. |
Forgot to mention -- puppy hair tends to tangle. It gets much easier when they have their adult coat. Also, I find that my boys' coats do better without a whole lot of leave-in products. Most sprays make their coats sticky and prone to tangling. When they are a mess, I use Pet Silk silk serum to undo tangles. I usually use it right before bath time or close to it. |
I use a tangle teazer brush its really good at taking tangles out without hurting. |

I have found that weekly baths with a good all natural shampoo and conditioner helps keep the fur silkier longer. I also use an all natural detangler or conditioning spray daily to help maintain until the next bath. They do love to play and roll around so your only defense is to use the best products you can find. A lot of the department store stuff is full of sulfates and chemicals that will dry the skin and coat. A product with sulfates and chemicals actually strip the skin of natural oils and make the oil glands work overtime to produce more oil so that you end up with an oily coat that much faster. |

Is this what you use? I haven't had the chance to use it yet but I plan to try it out in the next couple of days. |
