Soft Coat or Silk Coat? 2 Attachment(s) Hey Everyone! Meet my 4-month old Cruz! Could any of you experts out there tell me if my little guy will have a soft/cotton coat or a silky one based on the pictures? His head and legs have a very silky feel while the rest of his body feels more cottony. Thanks! Mo |
You can't really tell with there puppy coat. There adult hair can be massively different. |
I vote silky, but it's really too early to tell. |
Like the others said its early to tell but with all that curl I would say cotton or maybe modified. |
Sooo fluffy and cute just like a teddy bear. I'd think cotton coat, or maybe a mix. Draco is silky, and my first yorkie. To me he felt fluffy but by comparison not nearly as fluffy as I've seen some pups. Cruz is such a cute pup, congrats! |
Thanks for your responses everyone. I guess I'll just have to wait and see! |
My little guy could be your puppy's twin. His name is Rocco and his coat looks exactly the same. I am also wondering what his adult coat will be like. |
When they're this young, it's very hard to tell. He is an adorable little guy, I can tell you that !! I noticed a little wave so it may be a little soft, but his head seems to be clearing nicely. That's not to say he won't have a very pretty coat....I actually want him !! lol |

Would love to see a picture of Rocco to compare! |

When I got him I thought it was going to be very soft but the texture seems to be changing quite quickly when he hit the 4-month mark. |
Cruz is so adorable! Makes me want a puppy!:p Did you see/ meet the parents? Their hair should be a good indicator of how Cruz will turn out. It looks to me like he'll have gorgeous thick silky hair. |

I tried posting a few pictures of Rocco but it said they were too large. I am not sure how to resize. I changed the picture in my avatar. Rocco is also four months old. I have some real cute ones where you can see he is as fluffy as a soft teddy bear. I will ask my husband if he news how to resize them. |
My Gizmo is 11 months old and had a fluffy wavy coat at your pups age, I'm gonna say cotton or a mixed coat. Gizmo now has a silky face and ears as well as legs and tail, but his whole body is very fluffy :-) he also is still golden and black :-) I've heard it takes longer for the cotton coats color to break on their coat, and that seems to be the case with Gizmo. He has some silver hairs but very few, and his gold has grown further, but his body and head are black pretty much :-) |

Either way I'm excited to see how it turns out! |

My Finn was like a teddy bear when we got him, thick dark black curls and so puffy. Then breeder shaved him completely when she was watching him for a week for me and it grew back silver on the head and around the face (he used to look like a bandit with a black mask), with almost no curl. Still cute as can be. I think his fur is a mix. We are having major issues with matting because he hates to be brushed and if you try to groom his belly region he snaps yet that is what is matted the most. I planned to ask the groomer when I take him in this week (first time there, she owns her own yorkies and everyone in town with them goes to her) what she thinks his coat is now that he is 11 months. |
I would guess silky but it's hard to tell without seeing him. And he is still young. That fluffy wavy hair is puppy coat but he should be starting to change at the roots. Can you tell a difference there? |

In regards to snapping when groomed, I really feel that this can be easily resolved with some positive reinforcement training. A friend's Yorkie hated it as well and I worked on getting him to accept the brush and clippers by handling the puppy while holding the brush and sharing treats/praise. Most people are too busy to work on this kind of training and the puppy only comes into contact with those items when it's timed to be groomed, which can prove to be a scary experience! |

What kind of indicators do you use if you could see the puppy to predict the kind of coat they will have? The texture at the roots is different than than the puppy coat and feels thinner but the color hasn't changed. Also, is it true you can tell what the pup's coat is going to be as an adult by the reflection of a light/flash in their eyes? Thanks! |
