bald patch My male yorkie recently has a bald patch just under his neck on his back. I noticed it the other night after his bath. It is about the size of a half dolloar and it down to the skin. It is the same spot that I generally give him his flea meds but I haven't started that this year yet. I took him to the vet Wed, and the vet was perplexed as well. He plucked some hair samples from Sammie and said he wouldn't have any results back for a week. Other wise he was healthy. I haven't seen him sratching but have seen him rub along the bottom of our couch, but not very many times. He is eating and drinking ok, going potty ok, I just don't know what is causing his hair to fall out in just that spot....Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions or advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks Sandy and Sammie:animal36 |
Well, hopefully it's not ringworm as that can cause bald areas...did the mention mention it? The only way to test for it is to grow it out in culture for 10-14 days. Ringworm is contagious, btw. Otherwise...did he get a vaccine in that area or is it too far up for that? |
No the vet didn't mention ringworm cause he said he truly didn't know what was causing it. The culture he did will be back next wed and he will call me then. Yes I knew ringworm is contagious....I use a q-tip to apply the ointment the vet game me to put on the bald patch. No he hasn't had any shots in that area. |
Were there any lesions like from a spider bite? |
No there is nothing on the skin anywhere to make me think he was bitten by something....it's just really strange. I think it is getting bigger, but I don't know for sure. I will have test results Wed. |
People sometimes develop alopecia I wonder if that could be it. In people it can come on from stress and things and can be temporary or sometimes permanent. |
My Sophie had a small bald spot in the same spot as yours. Now it's much larger and scaly. When I looked at her closely, I found that her ears and paws were dry and scaly, too. By then she was really scratching, so I took her to a dermatology vet who couldn't find what was causing it. After taking skin scrapings and hair samples for culturing, we go back tomorrow for the results. |
My Lola had the same thing. I thought the area was getting bigger so I took her to the dermatologist. They told me it was where she had been given her rabies vaccine and the hair would probably never grow back. It's been 5 years, it hasn't grown back. She also has a tiny lump under the skin in the same spot. |
my Maggie has a bald spot as well... it was from the rabies shot and that was a few years ago.. and the hair has never grown back as well... the vet told me it is a reaction sometimes to the vaccine.. no hair yet.. |
